Field Hockey Sails Past the Shorewomen, 3-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (8-6, 4-2 CC) continued its strong stretch of Centennial Conference play Wednesday evening, using two first-quarter goals and a dominant defensive performance to shut out visiting Washington College (3-10, 1-5 CC), 3-0, under the lights at Swan Field.

Poppy Swallow opened the scoring with her first goal of the season before Erica Pardón added her team-leading 10th tally less than six minutes later. Alice Stein rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter, while goalkeeper Steph Ionescu made four saves to record her first shutout of the season.

The victory marked Haverford's second consecutive Centennial Conference win following Saturday's 4-1 Senior Day triumph over Gettysburg. The Scarlet and Black have now won four of their last five conference contests, improving to 4-2 in Centennial play.

Haverford controlled the pace throughout much of the evening, finishing with a commanding 24-4 advantage in shots, including a 17-4 edge in attempts on goal. The Fords also held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners while limiting Washington College to just one shot in the opening quarter and none in the third.

The Scarlet and Black established their attacking presence early, with Pardón forcing Washington College goalkeeper Charlotte Schurman into a save just before the six-minute mark.

Haverford capitalized on the ensuing opportunity, as Swallow collected the rebound following Schurman's initial save on Pardón and slipped a shot between the goalkeeper's legs at 6:02. The tally marked Swallow's first goal of the season and gave the Fords an early 1-0 advantage.

Washington College looked to respond just over two minutes later, but Ionescu turned away Tyler Rice in the ninth minute to preserve the narrow lead.

The Fords continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage in the 12th minute. Morgan Reis forced Schurman into a save at 11:55, but Pardón was there to capitalize on the rebound, hammering the loose ball into the cage just three seconds later for her team-leading 10th goal of the season and a 2-0 Haverford lead.

The Scarlet and Black nearly added another goal before the end of the opening period, as Reis forced consecutive saves from Schurman in the 13th minute before Pardón tested the Washington College goalkeeper again just three seconds later.

Haverford carried its two-goal advantage into the second quarter and continued to generate opportunities. Pardón forced Schurman into back-to-back saves in the 22nd minute before Stein saw an attempt turned away by a defensive save from Ashley Swan.

The Fords maintained their attacking pressure, with Pardón sending another attempt wide in the 24th minute before Reis tested Schurman again less than a minute later.

Haverford earned its first penalty corner in the 26th minute, with Reese Dewhirst delivering the insertion before Louisa Coughlin sent an attempt wide.

Washington College generated its best stretch of the opening half in the final two minutes before the break. Rice forced Ionescu into a save in the 29th minute, and Natalie Watkinson followed with another attempt on goal just 19 seconds later, but the Haverford goalkeeper was equal to both opportunities.

The Scarlet and Black entered halftime holding a 2-0 advantage after outshooting the Shorewomen 13-3 through the opening 30 minutes.

Haverford continued to dictate possession after the intermission, limiting Washington College to zero shots throughout the third quarter while generating six attempts of its own.

Lily Gover saw an early third-quarter opportunity blocked in the 33rd minute before Pardón forced Schurman into another save following a penalty corner in the 37th.

The Fords continued to press, with Gover having another attempt blocked before sending a shot wide in the 40th minute. Stein followed with a blocked attempt moments later before forcing Schurman into a save in the 42nd.

Washington College attempted to establish momentum early in the fourth quarter, but Ionescu denied Rice in the 48th minute before the Shorewomen earned a penalty corner.

The Haverford defense remained composed, preventing Washington College from generating another shot over the final 12 minutes of regulation.

The Fords eventually put the contest out of reach in the 52nd minute, courtesy of an impressive individual effort from Stein. The sophomore forward weaved her way through multiple Washington College defenders, carrying the ball into the circle before firing a shot past Schurman at the 51:23 mark. Her second goal of the season extended the Scarlet and Black's advantage to 3-0.

Haverford continued to generate opportunities following the insurance tally, with Pardón forcing another save from Schurman less than 30 seconds later. Reis added an attempt on goal in the 54th minute, while Pardón sent another shot wide in the 58th.

The Fords earned one final penalty corner in the closing seconds, with Alya Bakir delivering the insertion before Coughlin forced Schurman into a save with just 16 seconds remaining.

Pardón paced Haverford with nine shots, including seven on goal, while Reis finished with five attempts, all on target. Stein added four shots, including three on goal, while Gover contributed three attempts. Swallow converted her lone shot of the evening for the opening tally.

Ionescu played the full 60 minutes in goal, turning away all four Washington College attempts on target to secure her first shutout of the season. Schurman finished with 13 saves for the Shorewomen, while Swan added a defensive save.

The victory improved Haverford to 4-2 in Centennial Conference play, giving the Fords momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

Haverford returns to action Saturday, Oct. 17, traveling to Carlisle, Pa., to face Dickinson in Centennial Conference play. The contest is scheduled to begin at noon.
