Men's Soccer Finds Late Magic in Homecoming Shutout of Washington College

HAVERFORD, Pa. – First-year Austin Branch picked an opportune moment for his first collegiate goal, breaking a scoreless deadlock in the 85th minute to lift the Haverford College men's soccer team to a crucial 1-0 Centennial Conference victory over Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Walton Field.

The Homecoming triumph improved the Fords to 8-2-1 overall and 2-2 in Centennial Conference play, while the Shoremen fell to 2-4-5 overall and 0-3-1 in conference action. Haverford remained perfect at home this season, improving to 6-0, and men's soccer has not suffered a regulation loss on its home fields since Oct. 26, 2024.

With three important points on the line in the Centennial Conference race, Haverford emerged from halftime with a renewed sense of urgency, turning purposeful passing and sustained pressure in the attacking third into a decisive late breakthrough.

The opening 45 minutes featured limited scoring opportunities for both sides. Charles Sharp registered Haverford's first attempt in the 17th minute, sending a shot wide, while Washington College's Scott O'Donnell forced goalkeeper Grayson Benson into his first save of the afternoon in the 31st minute.

The Fords generated their best sequence of the first half shortly afterward, as Aidan Wong tested Washington College goalkeeper Hannes Budde in the 33rd minute. Connor Gustafson followed with an attempt that was blocked, earning Haverford a corner kick. Sho Nadata added a late effort in the 45th minute, but the teams entered halftime scoreless after recording four shots apiece.

Haverford came out of the break with greater attacking intent, beginning with a pair of headers from Thomas Vanni in the 50th and 55th minutes. Vanni then forced Budde into a save in the 59th minute, and Aiden Lee followed with another shot on target less than a minute later.

Washington College nearly found the opener against the run of play in the 64th minute when Simone Perin struck the post on a ball that appeared to the untrained eye to curl into the back of the net, before the Fords continued to dictate much of the second-half action.

Haverford's pressure intensified as the match entered its final 15 minutes. Sharp sent a header wide in the 77th minute before Nadata had a pair of attempts blocked in the 77th and 81st minutes. Carter Kroenke followed the second blocked effort with a shot that required another save from Budde, while Sharp and Vanni each registered additional attempts as the clock continued to wind down.

The breakthrough finally arrived with just 5:22 remaining. Working the ball through the midfield and into the attacking third with a series of quick, purposeful passes. Vanni found Sharp in position to deliver the final ball. The forward connected with Branch, who finished wiith a beautiful goal to put Haverford ahead 1-0 at the 84:38 mark.

The goal was the first of Branch's collegiate career, while Sharp collected the assist on the game-winner.

Washington College mounted a late response, forcing Benson into saves on attempts from Niland Gallo in the 86th minute and Jah-Torre Bailey in the 87th. The Shoremen continued to press in the final moments, but Haverford's defense held firm, with Benson making one final stop on Wilken Bauer's attempt in the closing second to preserve the shutout.

The Fords finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots, including a commanding 12-6 margin in the second half. Vanni led Haverford with five attempts, while Sharp and Nadata contributed three apiece. Budde recorded four saves between the pipes for Washington College.

Benson finished with four saves of his own, including three in the second half, to secure another clean sheet and help Haverford collect three valuable points in the Centennial Conference standings.

Haverford returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 6, traveling to Middletown, Pa., for a non-conference matchup against Penn State Harrisburg at 7 p.m. The Fords then return to Walton Field on Saturday, Oct. 10, to host defending Centennial Conference champion Dickinson in a pivotal conference clash at 3 p.m
