MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team (9-2-1) used a first-half goal from Thomas Vanni and another clean sheet from Grayson Benson to secure a 1-0 road victory over Penn State Harrisburg (3-6-2) Tuesday evening at the Turf Complex.
Haverford dictated the action for long stretches, finishing with a commanding 23-6 advantage in shots and a 12-3 edge in corner kicks. The Fords put 10 attempts on target, while Benson stopped all five shots he faced to preserve the one-goal advantage.
The Scarlet and Black immediately went on the front foot, producing 16 shots and five corner kicks during a dominant opening 45 minutes. Max McKinney forced Penn State Harrisburg goalkeeper Jimmy Shensky into an early save before the Fords earned three corner kicks in a span of less than two minutes.
Austin Branch and Charles Sharp each tested Shensky as the pressure continued, but the Nittany Lions generated a pair of chances of their own. Benson denied Josiah Shamberger in the 20th minute before stopping Ariel Garcia in the 25th to keep the contest scoreless.
Haverford continued to knock on the door. Vanni had an effort cleared away by Ian Cuatianquiz for a defensive save in the 31st minute and forced another stop from Shensky in the 36th. Aidan Lacy followed with a shot on target moments later.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 37th minute. Carter Kroenke played a beautiful ball down the right flank to Jonathan D'Amour, who raced toward the end line before whipping a one-time service across the face of goal. Vanni timed his run perfectly, meeting the service in stride and tapping a volley past Shensky to give the Scarlet and Black a 1-0 advantage.
Penn State Harrisburg emerged from the break looking for an equalizer, with Benson called upon to deny Garcia in the 48th minute and Kristopher Lage in the 51st. The Fords nearly doubled their advantage in the 56th minute when Sharp's header beat Shensky but crashed off the crossbar.
The Scarlet and Black continued to generate opportunities while protecting the one-goal margin. Haverford earned seven corner kicks in the second half, with Sharp forcing another save in the 67th minute and Connor Gustafson putting a header on target in the 74th.
The Nittany Lions made a final push down the stretch, but Benson remained composed between the posts. The Haverford goalkeeper stopped Brandon Axton's header in the 76th minute, while the Fords' defense held firm over the closing stages to finish off the road shutout.
Vanni and Sharp shared the team lead with seven shots apiece, with Vanni putting three on target. Josh Brown added two shots, while Branch, Gustafson, McKinney and Lacy each registered an attempt on goal. Benson finished with five saves to secure the clean sheet, his second straight shutout for the Scarlet and Black and sixth of the season.
Haverford returns to Centennial Conference action Saturday, Oct. 10, welcoming Dickinson to Walton Field for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
