HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team (6-6-3, 1-5-2 CC) and Washington College (7-7-1, 2-5 CC) traded goals and momentum throughout a wild Centennial Conference contest Wednesday afternoon at Walton Field, with the visiting Shorewomen ultimately prevailing 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller.
Cate Dugan delivered a breakout performance for the Scarlet and Black, scoring the first two goals of her collegiate career and adding an assist for a five-point afternoon. Sofia Terry also found the back of the net for Haverford, which raced out to a 2-0 advantage in the opening eight minutes before the teams combined for five more goals.
The Fords twice held the lead and later battled back to level the contest at 3-3 in the 74th minute, but a late Washington College strike proved decisive. Both teams finished with 11 shots, while Haverford held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Haverford wasted little time opening the scoring, striking just 2:33 into the contest. Clare Hawley fed a perfectly placed ball to Dugan, who finished the opportunity for her first collegiate goal to give the Scarlet and Black an early 1-0 advantage.
The Fords doubled their lead less than five minutes later, with Dugan helping create another scoring opportunity. Hawley and Dugan combined to set up Terry in front of the goal mouth, who converted at 7:14 for her third goal of the season, sending Haverford ahead 2-0 before eight minutes had elapsed. Washington College gradually worked its way back into the contest, cutting the deficit in half in the 23rd minute. After Sophie Kilbride tested Haverford rookie goalkeeper Braidyn Recker, the Shorewomen struck just 39 seconds later, with Kilbride setting up Dafny Vasquez's header at 22:41 to make it 2-1.
The Fords nearly restored their two-goal cushion in the 26th minute when Emma Kirk struck the crossbar with a lofting free kick. Dugan followed with another attempt in the 29th minute, sending a shot wide as Haverford continued to threaten. The Scarlet and Black carried their 2-1 advantage into halftime, setting the stage for an action-packed final 45 minutes.
Washington College emerged from the break quickly, leveling the contest at 48:34. After a tussle on the end line left Recker out of position, Kilbride again provided the setup for a header from Vasquez, who netted her second goal of the afternoon into an empty net to bring the Shorewomen even at 2-2. The visitors continued to press, but Recker kept Haverford level with a pair of important stops, denying Audrey MacNair in the 63rd minute before turning away Lily Barnum less than three minutes later.
The back-and-forth affair continued into the final 20 minutes, with Washington College taking its first lead at 70:27. Vasquez turned provider this time, setting up Annie Kotis for her first goal of the season to give the Shorewomen a 3-2 advantage. The Fords responded just 3:15 later, as Kyra Spears delivered the assist on Dugan's second goal of the afternoon at 73:42. The equalizer brought Haverford level at 3-3 and capped a memorable individual performance for Dugan.Â
The celebration was short-lived, however, as Washington College answered less than four minutes later. Kaileigh Brady scored from long range at 77:17, her seventh of the season, sending a salvo past the reach of Recker to restore the Shorewomen's advantage at 4-3.Haverford mounted a determined late push, generating several dangerous opportunities in search of another equalizer. Consecutive corner kicks in the 81st minute led to a flurry of chances, with Terry having an attempt cleared off the line by a team save before Reese Meyers forced goalkeeper Olivia Allen into another stop just seconds later.
The Fords came agonizingly close to tying the contest in the 82nd minute when Hawley's attempt struck the crossbar, marking the second time Haverford had been denied by the woodwork in the contest. Haverford continued to press into the closing seconds, with Molly Morris forcing Allen into one final save at 89:51, but the Shorewomen held on for the 4-3 victory.
The Fords now turn their attention to another Centennial Conference home matchup Saturday, hosting Franklin & Marshall at noon for Senior Day at Walton Field. A pregame ceremony will honor Haverford's seven seniors: Allie Billups, Mia Peifer, Ali Dorrego, Molly Morris, Emma Kirk, Giana Coletti and Sofia Terry.Â
