Men’s Soccer Secures Key Centennial Road Win at Muhlenberg, 2-0

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team (12-3-1, 4-3 CC) picked up a crucial three points in the Centennial Conference standings Wednesday evening, securing a 2-0 road victory over Muhlenberg (5-6-3, 3-2-2 CC) at Jeff Morris '82 Field.

Charles Sharp and Jonathan D'Amour supplied the goals for the Scarlet and Black, while goalkeeper Grayson Benson recorded three saves to register his eighth shutout of the season. The victory pushed Haverford to 12 wins overall and, more importantly, moved the Fords to 4-3 in conference play with two regular-season contests remaining.

With the Centennial Conference postseason race entering its final stretch, Wednesday's result carried significant implications. Haverford entered the contest with nine conference points and emerged with 12, collecting a valuable road victory over a Muhlenberg side that began the evening with 11 points. The Fords moved ahead of the Mules in the conference standings, strengthening their position in the race for a Centennial Conference tournament berth.

Haverford wasted little time establishing its advantage, striking less than six minutes into the contest. Following a long throw-in from Carter Kroenke, the ball bounced around the penalty area before Sharp pounced on the loose ball and fired a powerful strike into the back of the net at 5:52, giving the Scarlet and Black an early 1-0 lead.

Muhlenberg looked to respond, generating several opportunities throughout the opening half. Owen Zoeller sent an attempt wide in the 17th minute before Mack Metcalf followed with another effort less than two minutes later.

The Fords continued to search for a second goal, with Vanni sending an attempt high in the 21st minute. John Dowd followed with a shot over the crossbar in the 25th minute, while Sharp and Aiden Lee also registered attempts as Haverford looked to build on its early advantage.

The Mules maintained pressure in the latter stages of the half, earning three corner kicks over the final 12 minutes. Benson came up with an important stop in the 35th minute, turning away Jake Marks to preserve the one-goal advantage.

Despite Muhlenberg holding a 10-5 edge in first-half shots, Haverford carried its 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The hosts continued to press following halftime, earning a corner kick in the 49th minute before Metcalf registered another attempt in the 52nd. Benson was called into action again in the 57th minute, denying Sim Dorsey to keep the Fords in front.

Haverford doubled its advantage in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a corner kick to secure a crucial insurance goal. Vanni delivered a curling ball toward the goal that took a slight deflection off a Muhlenberg defender before finding the back of the net at 62:35, extending the Scarlet and Black's lead to 2-0.

The insurance goal provided a critical cushion as Muhlenberg continued to push forward in search of a response.

Haverford nearly added another goal in the ensuing minutes, with Lee registering an attempt at 65:40 before Sharp sent a shot high less than a minute later.

The Mules continued to create opportunities, but Benson remained steady between the posts. The Haverford goalkeeper made another key stop in the 74th minute, turning away Gabe Blikshteyn's attempt to maintain the two-goal advantage.

Thomas Bonos nearly extended the lead in the 85th minute, putting a shot on target that Muhlenberg goalkeeper Nico Famularo turned aside.

Muhlenberg generated several late attempts, but the Scarlet and Black held firm defensively through the final whistle to complete the shutout and secure three vital conference points.

Benson finished with three saves across 90 minutes, earning his eighth clean sheet of the campaign. Sharp and Vanni each registered three shots, while Lee added two attempts. Haverford finished with 10 shots, including three on target, against a Muhlenberg side that produced 18 attempts but managed just three on goal.

The victory represented another important step for the Fords in a tightly contested Centennial Conference postseason race. With 12 conference points and two games remaining, Haverford strengthened its standing ahead of a pivotal final stretch of the regular season.

The Scarlet and Black return home Saturday, Oct. 24, to host Franklin & Marshall in another important Centennial Conference matchup at Walton Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m., with the contest also serving as Senior Day during Haverford's Family and Friends Weekend.
