HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's soccer team (13-3-1, 5-3 CC) celebrated Senior Day in emphatic fashion Saturday afternoon, rolling past Franklin & Marshall (4-8-2, 1-6-1 CC), 3-0, at Walton Field to clinch a Centennial Conference Tournament berth for the second consecutive season.
Before kickoff, the Scarlet and Black honored eight seniors for their contributions to the program: Josh Brown, Max Lovinger, John Dowd, Thomas Vanni, Jack Bonner, Aidan Lacy, Carter Kroenke and Saylen Cardoni.
The Fords made the occasion even more memorable with a dominant performance, as Jonathan D'Amour, Dowd and Charles Sharp each found the back of the net. Goalkeeper Grayson Benson anchored another outstanding defensive effort, recording his ninth shutout of the season as Haverford extended its winning streak to three matches.
The victory pushed Haverford to 15 points in Centennial Conference play, securing a return trip to the conference postseason with one regular-season contest remaining. The Fords also reached 13 overall victories, continuing an impressive campaign as the conference tournament approaches.
Haverford established its offensive presence early, generating a pair of opportunities in the opening three minutes. Aaron Park had an attempt blocked before Dowd forced Franklin & Marshall goalkeeper Chancey Garcia into his first save of the afternoon.
Vanni nearly put the Fords ahead in the 12th minute, directing a header wide of the cage. The Diplomats responded with chances of their own, but Haverford's defensive unit kept the visitors from putting an attempt on target.
The Scarlet and Black broke through in the 21st minute following a sustained stretch of offensive pressure. After Sharp had consecutive attempts blocked, Vanni sent a ball toward the cage that deflected off a Franklin & Marshall defender and struck the crossbar. D'Amour was perfectly positioned to capitalize on the rebound, heading the ball into the back of the net at 20:43 for his third goal of the season and a 1-0 Haverford advantage.
The Fords continued to threaten following the breakthrough. Connor Gustafson had a header blocked just 32 seconds later before Park sent an attempt high in the 22nd minute. Sharp nearly doubled the advantage in the 26th minute, directing a header on target that Garcia turned aside.
Haverford carried its one-goal lead into halftime after outshooting Franklin & Marshall 10-5 in the opening period.
The Scarlet and Black emerged from the break looking to build on their advantage. Brown sent a header wide in the 47th minute before Park and Vanni registered additional attempts.
D'Amour nearly added his second goal of the afternoon in the 54th minute, forcing Garcia into another save. Haverford maintained its pressure, earning consecutive corner kicks as the second half progressed.
The Fords finally found their insurance goal in the 57th minute, with Dowd delivering a memorable Senior Day moment. Following a Haverford corner kick, the senior midfielder unleashed a powerful strike from distance that rocketed into the back of the net at 56:20. The impressive finish marked Dowd's first goal of the season and doubled the Scarlet and Black's advantage to 2-0.
Haverford wasted little time adding another, striking just over three minutes later. After Sharp and Park each forced Garcia into saves, the Fords continued to press forward. Park delivered a beautifully lofted cross into the penalty area, where Sharp rose to meet the service and headed home his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 59:42, extending Haverford's lead to 3-0.
The three-goal cushion allowed Haverford to control the remainder of the contest, with the Fords continuing to rotate players into the lineup while maintaining their defensive organization.
Franklin & Marshall managed just one shot in the second half, as Benson and the Haverford back line completed another clean sheet. The Diplomats finished without a shot on goal, with Benson earning his ninth shutout of the campaign without needing to record a save.
