Women's Soccer Halted at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Haverford College women's soccer team (6-5-3, 1-4-2 CC) fell to host McDaniel (9-2-4, 5-1-2 CC), 5-0, Saturday afternoon at the McDaniel College Soccer Complex, as the Green Terror scored twice in the opening half before adding three goals after the intermission.

Haverford played the majority of the contest with 10 players after starting goalkeeper Allie Billups received a red card after a challenge just outside of the box in the 15th minute. First-year goalkeeper Braidyn Recker entered in relief and turned away seven shots over the final 75:30, but McDaniel capitalized on its numerical advantage to secure the Centennial Conference victory.

The Scarlet and Black entered the contest looking to build on Wednesday's 4-0 home victory over Muhlenberg, which gave Haverford its first conference win of the season. Haverford generated the first shot on goal of the afternoon, as Emma Kirk tested McDaniel goalkeeper Sierra Ruehl in the fifth minute. The Fords earned their first corner kick in the 11th minute before Clare Hawley sent an attempt wide in the 15th.

The complexion of the contest changed considerably at the 14:30 mark when Billups was shown a red card, forcing Haverford to make a change in goal and continue the match a player down. Recker entered the lineup in place of Cate Dugan and took over between the posts for the remainder of the afternoon.

McDaniel began to apply pressure following the dismissal, with Recker making her first save against Hariette Ngwatung in the 18th minute. The Green Terror earned three consecutive corner kicks in the 21st and 22nd minutes before Carly Brock sent an attempt wide. Recker continued to keep the hosts off the scoreboard, denying Ngwatung again in the 26th minute before turning away Lizzie Corvera in the 30th.

McDaniel eventually broke through at the 31:17 mark, as Mackenzie Bott set up Ngwatung for her fifth goal of the season, giving the Green Terror a 1-0 advantage. The hosts continued to press following the opening tally, with Recker stopping Madisyn Aurigemma in the 39th minute to keep Haverford within striking distance.

McDaniel doubled its advantage shortly before halftime. Peyton Viggiano provided the assist on Gabriella Piantadosi's first goal of the season at 43:08, sending the Green Terror into the break with a 2-0 lead. Haverford faced an 11-2 deficit in first-half shots, while McDaniel earned nine corner kicks over the opening 45 minutes. Recker finished the period with four saves as the Scarlet and Black continued to battle despite playing a player down.

McDaniel maintained its attacking momentum after halftime, forcing Recker into another save against Alaina Miller in the 48th minute before adding a third goal at 48:54. Ngwatung completed her brace with her sixth goal of the season before The Green Terror generated more chances, earning consecutive corner kicks in the 51st and 52nd minutes. Recker denied Peyton Viggiano in the 52nd minute, keeping the deficit at three.

Haverford looked to respond in the 56th minute, as Ali Dorrego sent an attempt wide of the target. McDaniel answered just over a minute later, with Brock converting a feed from Ngwatung at 56:44 for her fourth goal of the season, extending the hosts' advantage to 4-0.

The Fords continued to compete despite the numerical mismatch, nearly breaking through in the 71st minute. Dugan sent an attempt off the crossbar, coming inches away from putting Haverford on the scoreboard. McDaniel continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, but Recker turned away another attempt from Corvera in the 81st minute. Molly Morris sent a shot high in the 85th minute as Haverford searched for a late goal.

The Green Terror completed the scoring at 88:38, as Aurigemma finished an opportunity created by Campanaro for her second goal of the campaign, accounting for the final 5-0 margin. McDaniel finished with a 24-5 advantage in shots, including a 12-1 edge in attempts on goal, while earning 16 corner kicks to Haverford's one.

Recker finished with seven saves across 75:30 in relief, recording four stops in the first half and three after the intermission. Billups played the opening 14:30 without facing a shot on goal. Kirk recorded Haverford's lone shot on target, while Hawley, Dorrego, Dugan and Morris each registered an attempt. Ngwatung led McDaniel with two goals, while Brock, Piantadosi and Aurigemma added one apiece. Ruehl made one save in 60:39 of action before Jilian Bouchard and Izzy Montalvo combined to complete the shutout.

Haverford now returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 21, hosting Washington College at Walton Field as Centennial Conference play continues. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
