HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's soccer team (3-4-3) and the Widener Pride (4-3-3) battled to a scoreless draw on Tuesday afternoon at Walton Field. The Fords controlled the attack with 20 shots, 11 of them on target, but could not break through against a stout Widener defense.
The opening half ended scoreless despite early chances from the Scarlet and Black. Emma Kirk sent a shot just over the bar in the second minute, while Emma Murray forced Widener goalkeeper Araba Abanyie into an early save in the fourth minute. Abanyie remained busy throughout the period, denying multiple efforts including back-to-back shots from Sophia Mitchell in the 22nd and 31st minutes. Widener responded with opportunities of its own, as Gracelyn Sarni fired high and Charlotte Burke tested Allie Billups, who made a strong stop in the 23rd minute.
The second half followed a similar script with Haverford pushing the pace but unable to find a breakthrough. Reilly Klein forced a save from Billups in the 47th minute before the Fords ramped up their attack. Carly Rusak's header in the 56th minute was pushed aside by Abanyie, who also stood tall during a flurry of corner kicks from Kirk between the 56th and 58th minutes. Abigale Baker's header was tipped over the crossbar, while Vilena Tchernychev's attempt was comfortably caught. Murray had a late chance in the 80th minute, but Abanyie again preserved the clean sheet as the match finished 0-0.
Billups notched her second shutout of the season, making three saves across 90 minutes. Mitchell led the Fords with four shots including three on target, while Tchernychev added three shots all on frame, and Murray tallied three attempts with two on goal.
Abanyie shined in goal for the Pride, recording 11 saves to secure the shutout. Klein and Abby Picollo each placed one shot on target, while Burke added another for Widener.
The Fords return to Centennial Conference play on October 4 when they travel to Chestertown, Maryland to face Washington College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
