HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College Field Hockey team swept the Centennial Conference's weekly field hockey honors, with senior Naomi York named Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore goalkeeper Steph Ionescu earning Defensive Player of the Week for matches ending September 28, the league announced in a release on Tuesday.
York, a native of Coronado, Calif., led the Fords with three goals in a 2-0 week that included an upset of No. 16 Franklin & Marshall. She opened with both tallies in a 2-0 victory over DeSales before adding a goal on her only shot in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Diplomats. Her efforts helped Haverford secure its first season with three victories over nationally ranked opponents. York currently sits in fourth among Centennial Conference competitors for goals per game (0.75).
Ionescu, from Wilton, Conn., backstopped the Fords with standout play in the cage over two victories. She recorded a shutout against DeSales with two saves and followed with a season-best 10 stops to preserve the victory over Franklin & Marshall. Ionescu currently sits fourth in the CC with a 80.4 save percentage entering play Tuesday.
The performances capped a milestone week for the program. Head coach Jackie Cox earned her 150th career victory on Saturday, while the Fords set a new program standard by defeating three ranked opponents in the same season for the first time in the national poll era. Earlier in September, Haverford defeated then-No. 12 SUNY Cortland and No. 12 Rowan.
The Fords (7-1, 1-0 CC) will be back in action on Tuesday evening in Allentown as the conference slate continues, making the trek to Muhlenberg for a 7 p.m. first pass under the lights at Scotty Wood Stadium.
