HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College volleyball team (7-2) defeated Eastern (6-2) in straight sets, 25-21, 30-28, 25-14, at Gooding '84 Arena on Tuesday evening, with the home team's attack percentage peaking at .400 in a sharp third set. The victory marked Haverford's second straight win over Eastern, following its road triumph over the Eagles on September 6 of last season in St. Davids.
The first set opened with a back-and-forth exchange of points, with
Kayla Chu's timely kill tying the score at 2-2. Haverford then gained momentum, propelled by a service ace from
Cameryn DeBlecourt that fueled a 5-0 run, including a key kill from
Charlotte Dziki at 7-5. As the Eagles called a timeout at 10-5 to halt Haverford's advance, the home side maintained a steady lead, benefiting from potent kills by
Izabela Potocnjak. Despite a late surge from Eastern, the Fords remained composed, closing the set 25-21 with
Eliana Brown's decisive kill helping set the tone, giving Haverford set point after the timeout at 23-20.
The second set escalated into a full-throttle battle. Eastern surged ahead early, taking a 7-2 advantage, but Haverford responded blow for blow to ground the Eagles.
Maggie Turner swung hard in the middle frames, delivering crucial kills that kept Haverford alive as Eastern threatened to widen the gap. The Fords seized on errors, but it was the play at the net that transformed the set into a spectacle. Dziki and Moord delivered emphatic blocks that sent the Haverford bench into a frenzy, and when
Elizabeth Cella rose up for a thunderous block to end it, sealing the marathon 30-28 win, Haverford had not only taken the set but seemed to have stopped Eastern's momentum entirely.
Haverford opened the third set with a strong defensive stand, as Dziki and Moord combined for a block against Eastern's Hannah Pringle to set the tone early. Brown was instrumental in building momentum, landing multiple kills, including a sequence of back-to-back points that stretched the lead to 5-2. Later in the set, Cella and Turner were key at the net, combining scoring and blocks to widen the gap, while DeBlecourt's steady distribution guided the offense to a 25-14 clincher. Notably, DeBlecourt recorded her 1,000th career assist during the match, adding 20 assists on the night.
Brown anchored both sides of the ball, recording 16 digs and 11 kills. Turner posted an efficient .533 hitting percentage with eight kills and led the team in blocks with six. DeBlecourt's 20 assists helped orchestrate the attack, while Cella finished with 12 kills and a .400 hitting percentage in a stellar performance.
Pringle led Eastern with 14 kills on 37 total attacks. Alexis Standford added seven kills with a .200 hitting percentage, while Jessie Schreiber chipped in five kills with a .267 percentage and three block assists. Veronica Faber contributed two service aces, four block assists and five digs.
The Fords face a very quick turnaround, as volleyball travels next to Elizabethtown, Pa., for a matchup against Elizabethtown College on Wednesday, September 17. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
