HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College Volleyball team (6-2) defeated Widener (1-7) in four sets on Wednesday night at Gooding '84 Arena, with set scores of 19-25, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-19.
The first set began with both teams trading early points, but a service ace by the Pride's Campbell Chronister set the tone out of the gates. Haverford quickly responded with a kill from
Maggie Turner, and an ace from
Izabela Potocnjak, giving the Fords a brief lead. Widener surged ahead with a series of kills and service aces, forcing Haverford to call a timeout at 7-3. Despite a strong effort that included kills from
Elizabeth Cella and
Fiona Moord, the Pride closed out the frame 25-19 on a kill from Gabriella Bottino.
The second set saw Haverford overcome an early deficit, as Potocnjak's kill tied it 2-2 following a service ace from
Dasha Igonin. Strong blocking from Moord and
Eliana Brown shifted the momentum, while Potocnjak added both kills and an ace to help build a 14-9 lead. A crucial block by Cella and Turner down the stretch sealed a 25-17 win, with Turner posting a career-best seven total blocks on the night.
Haverford established rhythm early in the third, highlighted by Moord's consistent attacking at the net. Brown and Cella added key kills, and
Kira Chaney delivered a pair of service aces to extend the lead to 13-8. Widener kept things close, but Moord's late kill and an error from the Pride secured the 25-20 win. Moord's 14 kills marked a career high, and she hit an astounding .619 for the match.
The fourth set opened with
Charlotte Dziki converting the first point off an assist from
Kayla Chu. Haverford extended its lead with DeBlecourt's ace and several Widener errors, building a 7-2 advantage. Brown's serving run, including three consecutive aces, pushed the score to 21-12. Widener closed within striking distance, but steady play from Cella and Moord ended the match, 25-19, on another Moord kill to seal things.
Brown added nine kills, 16 digs, and four aces, raising her career service aces total to 98. Brown's all-around performance complemented
Sierra Lever's 24 digs, which anchored the backcourt defense. Cella and Moord each finished with 14 kills and two blocks, while Widener was paced by Azira Benjamin, who posted 14 kills on 30 swings with a .333 hitting percentage. Liz Barnes recorded 28 digs to lead the defense, while Mary Carter contributed 14 assists and 16 digs. Bottino added nine kills and two aces.
