Field Hockey Scores Five, Shuts Out Eastern in Home Opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College field hockey team (1-0) defeated the Eastern Eagles (0-1) 5-0 on Saturday at Swan Field. Haverford's offense dominated with 37 shots, 29 on goal, as they found the back of the net five times. The home team scored in each quarter, highlighted by a two-goal burst in the third. Haverford's defense held Eastern to just two shots, with the Steph Ionescu making one save to secure the shutout. 

Haverford dominated the first quarter with multiple offensive attempts, highlighted by Louisa Coughlin scoring the first goal of the season at 8:09, giving Haverford a 1-0 lead. Abigail Trapp was instrumental in setting up plays, executing five penalty corners in the quarter. Despite several shots on goal from Haverford, Eastern's goalie, Angelina Catania, successfully saved attempts from Erica Pardon, Holly Vincent, and others. Eastern struggled to maintain possession, committing several fouls throughout the quarter.

The second quarter saw Haverford dominate offensively, with Erica Pardon scoring her first goal of the season at 21:14, assisted by Trapp, pushing the home team's lead to 2-0. Haverford applied consistent pressure with multiple penalty corners, including three in quick succession between 19:46 and 21:04, but Eastern's goalie Catania made several key saves to limit the damage. The quarter was also marked by frequent fouls from both teams, with Ava Giardino receiving a yellow card at 25:53 and Kendall Fleet a green card at 22:00. Eastern struggled to find offensive opportunities, failing to capitalize on Haverford's penalties.

The Fords took control early in the third quarter with Alice Stein scoring at 36:06, assisted by Vincent, marking Stein's first-career goal. Shortly after, Pardon extended the lead with a goal at 36:27 following her own blocked shot. Despite multiple attempts by Haverford, including shots by Lily Gover and Caroline Frost, Eastern's goalie Catania recorded several saves to keep the score at 4-0. The quarter was also marked by several fouls from both teams, including a yellow card issued to Eastern's Kacie Agnew at 34:01 and Haverford's Joelle McElroy at 39:10. 

The fourth quarter began with a penalty corner for Eastern, but Kara Frantz's shot was blocked at 46:40. Haverford responded with multiple penalty corners, including one at 52:14, which led to Naomi York scoring her first goal of the season at 52:29, extending Haverford's lead to 5-0. Eastern's Morgan Unruh received a yellow card at 48:47, and despite Eastern's attempts, including a saved shot by Cj Summa at 59:34, they were unable to score. The Fords' defense, backed by goalie Steph Ionescu, maintained a shutout as the game ended 5-0 in favor of Haverford.

Junior forward Erica Pardón led the team with two goals and eight shots, with seven on target, contributing one unassisted goal. Junior Louisa Coughlin stood out with the game-opening goal, scoring once on her two shots, both on target. First-year forward Alice Stein also added to the scoring tally with one goal from two shots, both on goal. Senior Naomi York contributed with a single goal, hitting the target twice from three attempts. Ionescu, defending the cage for the Scarlet and Black, recorded a shutout in her 60 minutes of play, stopping one shot to secure a win.

In their next game, the Fords will travel to Galloway, N.J., to face Stockton on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
