HAVERFORD, Pa. - The 16th-ranked Haverford College men's tennis team (12-2, 4-1 CC) dropped a Centennial Conference match to No. 12 Swarthmore (10-5 4,0 CC) by a score of 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Bramall Courts, snapping an 11-match winning streak. The matchup was worth one point in the Hood Trophy Rivalry.
The Garnet took the first doubles match on court three, as the team of Max Lindstrom and Winston Zhang turned away Teo Bortan and Zach Miano 6-3, before the Fords evened up doubles play on court one with a 7-5 victory for James McKenzie and Justin Minerva on court one over Michael Melnikov and Purushotham Koduri.
The victory was a pivotal one for Haverford, as the duo took down the Atlantic South region's top-ranked doubles team, handing them just their third loss of the season. With the first set of NCAA regional rankings set to be released next week, the win comes at a critical time in boosting their chances for a nationals selection.
The coveted lone double point was decided on court two, as the pairings of Marko Arboleda and Owen Kilmer and Andres Fente and Kai Chen went into a tie breaker, all knotted up at 6-6. Unfortunately for the Scarlet and Black, the visitors pulled away 7-5 in the tiebreaker to win the match 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker), giving the Garnet the first point of the day.
Starting off singles play, Swarthmore extended their lead over the host, as on court one Melnikov got past Arboleda 6-0, 6-4, while Lindstrom defeated McKenzie 6-2, 6-3, on the third court, to give the Garnet a 3-0 advantage.
Swarthmore clinched the match on court six, as Fente earned a 6-0, 6-4, result over Chait Krishna, for the visitor's fourth point of the day. The Garnet picked up their fifth victory of the day on court five, with Aamish Pal pulling out a 7-5, 6-3, win over Minerva, while Chen downed Niki Lavu 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6 tiebreaker), to push Swarthmore's lead up to 6-0. To wrap up singles play, Risha Verma was the victor of a tough 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4 tiebreaker) battle against Kilmer, to seal up a 7-0 Garnet win.
