CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Haverford College men's lacrosse team (9-5, 2-4 CC) earned a 16-10 road win over Washington College (7-7, 1-5 CC) on Saturday afternoon at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium in Chestertown.
Philip Passalaqua led the offense with a team-high five points (4 goals, 1 assist), while junior Reid Tietjen tallied his first hat trick of the season and added an assist for a four-point outing. On the defensive end, Sean McHugh caused a season-high five turnovers, and Ronan West collected a game-high seven ground balls. Drew Buck went 15-of-28 at the faceoff X and picked up six ground balls, while Jacob Abraham made 16 saves on 26 shots faced.
The Shoremen jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from Nicky Bond, Cory Morgan, and Grant Matthews. However, Haverford responded as rookies JT Anderson and Colin Hulett (man-up) scored to pull the Fords within one, 3-2, heading into the second quarter.
The second frame saw Reeve Hargrave and Matt Richards exchange goals before Passalaqua tied the game at 4-4. Tyler Vendetti gave Haverford its first lead at 5-4, but Washington quickly answered through Nate Winters. Tietjen put the Fords back in front, 6-5, before Cam Carrigan evened things once more. Haverford closed the half strong, shaking off some of the first quarter rust with back-to-back goals from Evan Wolpert and a buzzer-beater from Tietjen, taking a 9-6 advantage into the break.
Richards scored just nine seconds into the third quarter to make it 10-6, and although Carrigan scored yet again to cut the deficit, goals from Passalaqua and Tietjen stretched the lead to five at 13-8. Morgan completed his hat trick late in the quarter to make it 13-9 heading into the fourth.
Vendetti opened the fourth with his second goal of the day to extend the lead back to five at 14-9. Passalaqua followed with his fourth goal to push the margin to six at 15-9. Franklin Smithmyer briefly brought Washington back within five, but Will Weinstein's goal at the 2:32 mark sealed the six-goal margin.
Haverford held a 47-42 edge in ground balls, while the Shoremen made 21 turnovers.
Men's Lacrosse now returns to action on Saturday, April 19, when the Fords travel to face 17th-ranked Dickinson at Biddle Field. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. as Centennial Conference play continues.
