Women's Tennis Falls to No. 30 Christopher Newport, 6-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team (6-5) dropped a non-conference match to 30th-ranked Christopher Newport (9-6) by a score of 6-1 on Friday afternoon. Due to rainy weather, the match was played under the lights of Alumni Field House.

Court three saw the first victory of the day in doubles play, as Eva Taylor and Erin Gross of Christopher Newport took down Erika Phanord and Caroline Gay 6-3. In an intense battle on court one that saw Rachael Fitzgerald and Mallika Reddy rally back from 5-2, the Captains' duo of Raine Weis and Kylie Schaefer (the 15th-ranked team in Division III) just got past the Haverford duo 7-5, to clinch the all-important doubles point. To wrap up doubles play, the Fords' Lucy King and Abhishree Menon prevailed 6-3 over Samantha Robertson and Kendal Chang on court two.

The Captains increased their lead to 2-0 on court two, as Schaefer downed King 6-3, 6-2, before Weis got the better of Fitzgerald 6-1, 6-4, to give CNU a 3-0 lead.

Christopher Newport picked up the clinching fourth point of the match on the third court, as Chang turned away Reddy 7-5, 6-4, in a highly-spirited affair.

In what was a gritty battle on court four, Phanord put up the first point of the day for the Scarlet and Black, as the junior dismissed Eva Taylor 6-4, 6-3, 3-6.

The visitors earned their fifth point of the day on court six, as Gross took home a 6-1, 6-2, victory over Gay. Menon was locked in a battle with Robertson at the fifth flight, but ultimately fell in a hard-fought match, 7-5, 6-3, 1-0 (15-13), after a thrilling back-and-forth tiebreaker that sealed the 6-1 result.

Women's Tennis will remain inside the Alumni Field House for their next matchup, as the Fords will host Dickinson at 11:00 a.m. Prior to the match, at 10:30 a.m., a pregame ceremony will take place to honor Rachael Fitzgerald on Senior Day.
