Men's Soccer's Battle with No. 9 Dickinson Ends in 1-1 Draw

The result extended the Fords' unbeaten streak to begin the season to a program-record 14 matches, keeping pace with the 2015 squad that went 16 straight overall without defeat en route to an NCAA Tournament Elite 8 appearance.

CARLISLE, Pa. — The Haverford College men's soccer team (7-0-7, 1-0-4 CC) played to a 1-1 draw against ninth-ranked Dickinson (9-0-5, 3-0-2 CC) on Saturday afternoon at Phyllis Joan Miller Memorial Field.

The result extended the Fords' unbeaten streak to begin the season to a program-record 14 matches, keeping pace with the 2015 squad that went 16 straight overall without defeat en route to an NCAA Tournament Elite 8 appearance.

Goalkeeper Grayson Benson was a standout performer once again, making five key saves to preserve the point.

Haverford struck first in the 15th minute when Jonathan D'Amour found the back of the net. After a curling right-footed corner kick from Thomas Vanni was deflected near the near post, D'Amour met the loose ball with a perfectly timed volley, firing it past Dickinson goalkeeper Nick Potter to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Red Devils generated several looks at goal throughout the first half, with attempts from Timi Omoniwa, Jeremy Sallade, and Ethan Jarden, but none found the target. The Fords carried their one-goal advantage into the halftime break.

In the second half, Dickinson increased its attacking pressure, but Benson proved equal to the task. The junior goalkeeper came up big with saves on Jarden in the 50th minute and Sallade in the 56th, before denying Nicholas Dwamena soon after. However, the Red Devils finally broke through in the 69th minute when a corner kick deflected around inside the box and fell to Saul Iwowo, who slotted home from close range to tie the match at 1-1.

The Fords faced adversity in the 75th minute when Jack Bonner was shown a red card, forcing Haverford to play the remainder of the match with 10 men. Dickinson continued to press forward, firing four more shots — two on target — but Benson continued his stellar play with two critical saves to keep the match level. In the 88th minute, the Red Devils appeared to have scored the winner when Sallade headed in from close range, but the goal was waved off for a foul on Benson. Dickinson's final attempt, a shot from Jarden in the closing seconds, sailed over the crossbar, allowing Haverford to escape with the hard-fought draw.

Benson finished the contest with five saves on 18 shots faced, conceding just one goal. D'Amour provided Haverford's lone score, converting his only shot on target.

For Dickinson, Jarden led all players with seven shots, including two on frame. Iwowo notched the Red Devils' only goal, while Potter played all 90 minutes in goal, making one save.

Up next, Haverford travels to Farmingdale, N.Y., to face Farmingdale State on Wednesday, October 15. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
