GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Haverford College men's soccer team (0-1) fell to Arcadia (1-0) in its season opening match, as the hosts prevailed 1-0 on Friday evening at Jean Lenox West Field on the campus of Arcadia University.
A slow start from both teams to begin the game started to ramp up when Haverford's Oscar Guardo steered a shot on frame that was stopped by Knights' keeper Logan Gildea in the 19th minute.
The 25th minute saw the first and only goal of the game, as Tyler Jankowski gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead. After a menacing cross was swung into the box, Jankowski collected the bouncing ball and fired a strike past Haverford's rookie goalie Simon Bank for the early Knights advantage.
Following the goal, the Fords looked to level the game quickly, however, an Andrew Fritz shot to the bottom right corner was corralled by Gildea.
A teasing shot from Kieran Kunihiro forced another save out of Gildea in the 30th minute, as Arcadia was able to cling onto a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Haverford continued to knock on the doorstep of Arcadia to begin the second half, as Thomas Vanni and Aidan Lacy both unleashed shots on frame within the first 10 minutes, but each were denied by Gildea.
The Scarlet and Black continued to create chances and test the backline of the hosts, however, Gildea stood his ground and denied a shot from Gabe Knopf and two more shots from Guardo within the final 10 minutes of the contest to preserve the 1-0 shutout victory for the Knights.
Next up for the Fords is a quick turnaround on the road, as the Scarlet and Black participate in the Cialella Soccer Classic against the Raptors of Rutgers-Camden at Camden Athletic Complex for the second contest of a back-to-back. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
