Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Foiled by Rutgers-Camden, 1-0

CAMDEN, N.J.  - The Haverford College men's soccer team (0-2) dropped a Saturday night road contest to non-conference opponent Rutgers-Camden (2-0), falling by a final score of 1-0 on a windy and cloudy Saturday evening at the Camden Athletic Complex. The contest was part of the annual Cialella Soccer Classic.

Following a very quiet 30 minutes from both teams, Rutgers-Camden broke open the scoring in the 34th minute of action. Following a long free kick from Brandon Valeri that  was played to the left flank, a header from a Scarlet Raptor sent the ball bouncing into the box. The ball pinballed around the box until Eric Swen attempted a perfectly timed bicycle kick, a strike that sent the ball past a diving Jackson Simon, to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

Looking to equalize the game for the Fords just minutes later, Carter Kroenke unleashed a strike that just ricocheted off the crossbar in the 39th minute. The chance was the final for either team in the first period, as the Fords headed into the dressing room facing a 1-0 deficit.

Both squads continued to battle back and forth in between the boxes, as a fiery affair saw the yellow cards begin to pile up. Andrew Fritz tested the Rutgers-Camden keeper three times within the 60th and 71st minutes, forcing one save out of Sean Boen.

As the final minutes ticked down, Haverford continued to search for an equalizer. The 90th minute saw the best chance of the game, as Aidan Griggs ripped a shot that pinged off the post, giving the Scarlet Raptors a late scare. A rebound from Fritz that was saved by Boen to seal the deal for Rutgers-Camden, as the Scarlet Raptors survived a last ditch effort from the Fords to hang on to a 1-0 victory.

The match concluded a two-game road trip to begin the season for Haverford, as the Scarlet and Black will now return home to historic Walton Field on Wednesday, September 4, to take on the River Hawks of Susquehanna in matinee action. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
