LEXINGTON, Va. – A strong second half from the Fords wasn't quite enough to overcome an opening half deficit as Haverford College fell just short in a 14-12 non-conference women's lacrosse loss to host and 13th-ranked Washington & Lee University on Wednesday afternoon.
Trailing 9-3 with five minutes left in the first half, Haverford (1-2) notched three goals before the break, capped by Josie Ferri's score with only five seconds left.
Megan Gallagher's score in the opening 30 seconds of the second half drew the Fords within two, 9-7, of the nationally-ranked Generals (3-1) setting up a battle over the last 29 minutes.
Ferri notched a free position goal with two seconds left in the game but the upset-minded Fords' rally fell short on the Generals' home turf.
Haverford out scored W&L 9-5 over the game's last 35 minutes and converted four free-position attempts in that span.
Ferri finished with a team-high three goals and added a pair of assists along with earning four draw controls.
Gallagher, Diana Perry and Kenny Likes each scored twice for the Haverford attack.
Leah Hammerschlag put together a strong game in goal for Haverford coming up with 10 saves.
The Fords continue the season with their third straight road game, traveling to St. Mary's City, Md., on Saturday to square off in a non-conference contest against host St. Mary's College of Md.
