ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Diana Perry registered the first three-goal game of her collegiate career on Saturday afternoon but it was not enough as the Haverford College women's lacrosse team came up short to St. Mary's College of Maryland, 8-5, in non-conference action at Seahawk Stadium.
The Fords (1-3) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead a little over seven minutes in courtesy of Perry's first two markers of the game. Scoring the next three, the Seahawks (3-3) went up 4-2 with 8:40 left in the half before Josie Ferri moved Haverford to within one at intermission by converting a free position opportunity with under five minutes remaining.
St. Mary's scored two quick goals to start the second stanza to extend its lead to three, 6-3, but the gritty Fords answered with their own spurt on a free position conversion by Perrin Downing at 19:36, and Perry's third of the afternoon a minute later, to keep the deficit at one.
Haverford would not get any closer as the Seahawks registered the last two scores in the contest to capture the victory.
Perry's scoring output came on her team-high four shots. The Fords converted 3-of-7 free position shots while St. Mary's was 2-of-3.
Haverford won the ground ball battle, 24-20, as Grace Stockbower led the way with six.
Leah Hammerschlag made six saves for the Fords while Colleen Simpson mirrored that amount for the Seahawks with six of her own.
Accounting for two goals and two assists on the afternoon, Emily Shafer led the effort for St. Mary's.
Having completed its stretch of three-consecutive road games, Haverford returns home for another non-conference test when it welcomes Elizabethtown College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
