HAVERFORD, Pa. – A goal with 35 ticks left on the clock ended a three-game winning streak by the Haverford College women's soccer teams as visiting Lebanon Valley College stole a 1-0 non-conference battle at Walton Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Fords (4-2) came into the contest against the Dutchmen (4-4-1) riding a string of nearly 300 unscored upon minutes of action that grew to more than 380 with Wednesday's nail biter.
Lebanon Valley finally ended the Fords' shut out streak on a goal in the game's final minute.
Nicole Snyder sent a cross from the right sideline into a congested goal area where a defender deflected the ball away from the goal mouth, but the Dutchmen's Ely Kirkhoff got to the loose ball first and put a shot into the back of the Haverford net from about 18 yards out.
Up to that point both teams had missed opportunities along with outstanding individual efforts that kept the score knotted at 0-0.
Just before the half, a wild scramble 10 yards outside of the Fords' right post drew Haverford goalie Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds out into the play. The ball squirted free in front of the goal for what would be a point blank shot on an empty net until Kara McMahon raced to the rescue to snuff the Lebanon Valley chance away with a booming clear.
In the 73rd minute Haverford's Allie Chen gained possession for the Fords at the 18 off an Anna Rayne corner kick but Chen's shot clanged off the crossbar and out of play.
Both Herrick-Reynolds and Lebanon Valley netminder Becca Sykes spent as much time airborne or on the ground as they did upright directing traffic in front of their respective goals.
Herrick-Reynolds finished with four saves, not counting the two or three crosses she intercepted leaping up from the area of her goal line. Sykes ended with five saves, not counting the corner kick cross she was able to leap high in the air for to punch away from several Haverford players before they could get to the ball for a header opportunity.
Haverford out shot the visitors by an 11-8 count and owned a 6-2 advantage in corner kick chances. The outcome was finally decided, however, on a timely shot off a defensive deflection, sending the Fords to just their second defeat of the season.
Haverford heads back into action Saturday, Sept. 25 with a Centennial Conference battle against visiting Gettysburg College at Noon.
