COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Haverford College men's tennis team routed host Ursinus College, 8-1, Tuesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. Haverford swept through doubles and won at the Nos. 1-5 positions in singles.
At the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in doubles the Fords picked up identical 8-1 victories. Haverford's victory at No. 3, however, did not come as easily. Michael Gelberg and Lowell West clawed their way to a 9-8 victory with a 7-5 tiebreaker over Jason Zerbe and Josh Hollaman.
In singles, Kevin Caulfield, Will Garrett, Gelberg and Danny Himmelstein all won in straight sets. Ken Volk pulled out a three-set win over Zerbe at No. 5. After losing the first set, Volk went on to win the second, 6-4, and the third, 11-9.
The win improves Haverford to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial. The Bears drop to 4-8 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.
The Fords remain on the road this Saturday when they travel to Gettysburg College for a 1 p.m. match.
