MADISON, N.J. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team stretched their season-opening win streak to six with a 9-7 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon over the host Rangers of Drew University.
Haverford (6-0) got a game-high three goals from Jen Schmidt and two more, each, from Nora Proops and Perrin Downing. Drew (2-3) was led offensively by Cara Jefferies and Aileen Musynke who both tallied two goals in the loss.
The host Rangers got on the score board first, and fast, with a goal from Brooke Connell a little more than two minutes after the opening draw control.
Haverford answered back with four unanswered goals, though, to forge a lead it wouldn't give up the rest of the way.
Schmidt kicked off the barrage with her fifth of the season. Proops made it 2-1 in favor of the Fords then Schmidt added another, followed by Liz Mayell's score that made it 4-1.
Drew cut into the lead with a pair of late goals in the half but the Fords took a 4-3 lead into the intermission.
An early second half goal from Josie Ferri and then a Downing score 10 minutes later pushed the margin back to three but the Rangers stayed in the battle with Musynke's first of the game, trimming the Haverford advantage to two at 6-4.
When Downing and Proops followed with back-to-back goals for the Fords in a span of 56 seconds, Haverford was able to breath a little easier.
Leah Hammerschlag started in goal for Haverford and registered a season-high nine saves through 30-plus minutes of action to earn the win. Siobhan Neitzel came on in relief early in the second half and finished with three saves.
Hammerschlag came up big for the Fords several times in the first half. Five of her nine saves were on Drew free position shots while Neitzel had a save on a second half free position attempt. For the game the goalie tandem and the Haverford defense limited Drew to an 0-for-8 night in free position attempts.
The Fords will entertain Rutgers-Camden Saturday afternoon at Swan Field in their final non-conference game with the full conference slate to follow beginning next week.
