Women's lacrosse exacts revenge on Eastern, 11-7

ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – The Haverford College women's lacrosse team suffered just one set back in non-conference play last season. A one-goal loss late in the season to Eastern Univeristy. Saturday afternoon the Fords got revenge on their opponents from the Main Line with an 11-7 victory at Olson Field.

Despite the heavy rain and wind, Haverford (5-0) rallied from an early four-goal deficit to take the lead for good near the half-way point of the second half.

Josie Ferri scored a team-high three goals for the Fords. Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds added two goals and two assist. Alexa Pesce and Jen Schmidt also scored twice.

Grace Griffith led Eastern (0-2) with four goals. Three others scored one goal while Krystal Cairns handed out two assists.

The Eagles scored four goals in the first 12 minutes of the contest. Griffith scored two of the goals while Kelly Dando and Courtney Reinhold scored the other two. For the next 12 minutes the game went scorless until Pesce got the Fords on the board. After Griffith added her third goal three minutes later, Haverford scored twice in the final minute to pull within two before halftime.

Ferri scored 2:30 into the second half and Perrin Downing added a goal 46 seconds later to tie the score at 5-5. Downing's goal capped off a four-goal run for HC.

Griffith scored with 23:39 showing to give the Eagles the lead back, but Schmidt took over, scoring two goals just over 3:30 apart which gave the Fords the lead for good. Over the next five-plus minutes Ferri scored twice and Pesce and Herrick-Reynolds scored once to give Haverford an 11-6 lead with 11:17 remaining.

Kendall Rood scored a free position goal for Eastern at the 8:45 mark, but the Eagles could get no closer.

Leah Hammerschlag started in goal for Haverford, but Siobhan Neitzel (1-0) played the final 41:17 between the pipes and made one save to earn her first win of the season. Lindsey Corbitt (0-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles.

The Fords won the draw control battle, 14-6, and outshot Eastern, 19-14.

Haverford continues its non-conference slate, traveling to Drew University Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start.
