Men's tennis downs Wesleyan

ORLANDO – The Haverford College men's tennis team won their second straight match by a 6-3 score, downing Wesleyan (Conn.) University Wednesday afternoon in the Sunshine State.

Like in their initial match over spring break Monday, the Fords (2-1) used a sweep of the three doubles match-ups to jump ahead of the Cardinals (8-2).

Haverford's No. 1 tandem of Kevin Caulfield and Natty Sergay as well as the No. 2 team of Will Garrett and Hailiu Yang each earned 8-5 wins. At No. 3, Matthew Cebul and Danny Himelstein finished the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory.

Sergay put the Fords ahead 4-0 with a straight set, 6-3, 7-5, win at No. 4 singles but Wesleyan rallied with three wins to pull within one at 4-3.

Finally, though, Haverford earned the match-clinching point with Yang's 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, win at No. 2. Caulfield added the final Haverford point with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, win at No. 1 singles.

The victory mirrors the Fords' 6-3 win Monday over Drew University and leaves the team unbeaten in Florida this week with one more match to play, an 11:30 a.m. contest Friday morning against Vassar College.
