HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team fell to visiting Muhlenberg College, 4-2, in a Centennial Conference match-up Tuesday afternoon at Walton Field. The loss was the first of the season for the Fords.
The Mules (5-3, 2-0) scored in the game's third minute ending an unscored upon streak the Fords had built to over 314 minutes covering more than three games.
Haverford (6-1-2, 1-1-0) picked up the equalizer in the 16th minute when Anna Rayne served up a corner kick into the deep, center of the box where it ricocheted off the back of a Muhlenberg defender into her own goal.
Muhlenberg regained the lead off their own corner kick opportunity, scoring with just 36 seconds left in the half to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Early second half action was tilted in the visitor's favor as the Mules netted a pair of goals less than six minutes apart to build themselves a three-goal cushion.
Haverford's attack revved up over the final 25 minutes of action, though. Sarah Andrade cut the lead to two in the 75th minute with a high arching shot from 18 yards out that the Muhlenberg goalie, Michele Toher, leaped high for but allowed the ball to slip through her gloves for Andrade's first goal of the year.
In the final 15 minutes the Fords hammered out six shots but three were saved by Toher while the other three sailed just outside of the goal frame.
The Fords will try to get back on the winning track in their next outing, a home contest on Saturday, Oct. 3, against the 12th-ranked Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins University. Game time for the league affair is set for 1 p.m.
