Volleyball cruises past Knights, 3-0, in season opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The No. 24-ranked Haverford College volleyball team opened up its much anticipated 2009 season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-12) victory over visiting Neumann University on Tuesday evening at Gooding Arena. Haverford established early leads in the first and third sets to take the match.

Neumann (0-1) had a tough time stopping Haverford's (1-0) attack game. The Fords connected on 40 kills for a blistering .434 attack percentage. Both Rebecca and Rachel Salvo led the way with 10 kills each. Freshman Emily Mills chipped in with five as did Kelsey Cantwell who filled the box score. In addition to her five kills, Cantwell had a team-high eight service aces and eight digs. Kate Comey dished out 31 assists in the match.

Haverford held the Knights to just a .014 attack percentage. Ashley Mathis and Natalie George tallied just four kills each to lead Neumann.

In the third set, Cantwell opened things up with consecutive service aces to help establish a 7-0 lead for HC. The Knights never got closer than 10 points in the set.

The Fords remain home through the weekend, hosting the 24th Annual Haverford College Volleyball Invitational on Friday and Saturday. On Friday Haverford takes on St. Mary's College of Maryland at 4 p.m. followed by Frostburg State University at 8 p.m.
