Volleyball makes quick work of opponents in first day of tournament

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Hosting the 24th Annual Haverford College Volleyball Invitational, the Fords won both of their matches on Friday thanks to an offense that amassed 105 kills. Haverford defeated St. Mary's College of Maryland, 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19), in its opening match, and Frostburg State University, 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-12), in the nightcap.

Haverford (3-0) tallied 62 kills and a .312 attack percentage versus the Seahawks. Rebecca Salvo led the way with 23 kills which tied for the fourth-most kills in a four set match in school history and a .550 attack percentage. Kate Comey dished out 53 assists which was just three shy of tying her career-high. Caitlyn Tranquillo led the defense with 20 digs while Salvo (15) and Kelsey Cantwell (12) also reached double-digits.

Against Frostburg State Salvo led the way again with 14 kills and was the only Ford to reach double digits. Tranquillo recorded four service aces and Comey had 36 assists. Rachel Salvo and Cantwell each had 11 digs.

The Fords will have little time to rest as they take on Stevens Institute of Technology at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. Later in the day they face Susquehanna University at 3 p.m. to close out the tournament.
