HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team turned in a perfect Saturday at the Haverford Invitational, sweeping Lancaster Bible in the morning before outlasting Stockton in a five-set thriller in the afternoon at Gooding '84 Arena.
The Fords (3-1) received contributions throughout the lineup during the two victories, highlighted by a standout day from Fiona Moord in the middle. The sophomore totaled 21 kills against just two errors on 35 attempts, hitting .543 across eight sets. Marlee Hills supplied 18 kills, while Elizabeth Cella led the Fords with 30 kills across the doubleheader.
Haverford also received strong production from its setting tandem of Dasha Igonin and Anna Krotky Koeppe, who combined for 85 assists on the day. Igonin totaled 52 assists, while Krotky Koeppe added 33.
Haverford 3, Lancaster Bible 0 (Set Scores: 25-20, 25-23, 25-21)
Haverford opened Saturday with an efficient offensive performance, hitting .312 as a team in a straight-set victory over Lancaster Bible. The Fords registered 42 kills against just 13 attacking errors while hitting above .280 in all three sets.
Hills paced the attack with 12 kills on 27 swings, hitting .296 while adding seven digs and two service aces. Cella reached double figures with 10 kills and six digs, while Moord was nearly unstoppable in the middle, putting away nine kills on just 15 attempts with one error for a .533 hitting percentage. Moord also contributed a solo block, a block assist and an ace.
The Fords and Chargers traded momentum early in the opening set before Haverford created some separation. With the score tied at 8-8, Hills put down a pair of kills as part of a stretch that pushed the Fords ahead 10-8. Igonin later helped extend the advantage, recording a kill before consecutive Lancaster Bible attack errors made it 14-9.
Moord then took over in the middle, putting down kills on consecutive Haverford points to extend the advantage to 17-10. The Chargers eventually trimmed a 22-14 deficit to three at 22-19, but Gia Frank stopped the run with a kill. Moord supplied another kill to bring up set point before Hills finished the opening frame with a kill for the 25-20 victory.
Haverford wasted little time taking control of the second set. Igonin served the Fords to the first six points of the frame, opening the set with back-to-back aces before Cella, Moord and Hills each registered kills. Hills added another kill during the run as Haverford raced ahead 6-0.
The advantage quickly grew to 11-1. Hills supplied another kill and an ace before Cella and Moord combined on a block. Haverford eventually led 14-4 following another Cella kill, but Lancaster Bible steadily worked its way back into the set.
The Chargers pulled within 16-14 before Moord stopped the surge with a kill. Lancaster Bible made one final push after Haverford reached set point at 24-19, scoring four consecutive points to close within 24-23. A Chargers service error finally ended the comeback bid and handed Haverford the 25-23 victory and a 2-0 match advantage.
Haverford again grabbed the early advantage in the third. A Frank kill and a Lancaster Bible attack error helped the Fords establish a 5-2 lead before kills from Hills and Moord pushed the margin to 9-5. Moord followed with an ace for a 10-5 advantage. The Fords maintained control from there. Cella and Frank each supplied kills as Haverford stretched the lead to 16-9, while Moord's final kill of the match made it 17-10. Cella later put away a kill for an 18-11 advantage.
Lancaster Bible again made a late charge, trimming Haverford's 24-17 lead to 24-21, but a service error ended the match and completed the sweep.
Igonin finished with 22 assists and two aces, while Krotky Koeppe added 14 assists, four digs and two aces. Frank contributed seven kills, while Haverford totaled eight service aces as a team.
Haverford 3, Stockton 2 (Set Scores: 25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 15-9)
The Fords capped their unbeaten Saturday with a dramatic five-set victory over Stockton, taking the opening two sets before the Ospreys answered to force a decisive fifth.
Cella paced the Fords with 20 kills, marking her second 20-kill performance in as many days after recording 24 in Friday's Invitational opener. Frank added 15 kills while hitting .400 and Moord continued her outstanding day with 12 kills against just one error on 20 attempts for a .550 hitting percentage. Moord also registered a solo block and six block assists.
Haverford came out firing offensively in the first set, hitting .382 with 17 kills. After the teams traded the first six points, Moord delivered three kills during a 4-0 Haverford run that gave the Fords a 7-3 advantage.
Cella later helped Haverford create further separation. The sophomore delivered three kills during another Fords surge that turned a 10-8 advantage into a 14-8 lead. Stockton pulled within three at 21-18, but Cella responded with another kill and later put away the swing that brought up set point at 24-20. Frank ultimately finished the frame with a kill for the 25-21 victory.
The second set provided Haverford's first major comeback of the afternoon. The Fords built an early 8-3 advantage before Stockton responded, eventually moving ahead 17-14. The Ospreys stretched that margin to 20-16 before Haverford began to chip away. Cella and Hills each registered kills before consecutive Chaney serves helped the Fords erase the deficit. Chaney delivered an ace to make it 21-19, and back-to-back Stockton attack errors at the net brought Haverford even at 21-21.
After Stockton briefly retook the lead, Haverford answered again. An Ospreys attack error tied the set at 22 before Moord's solo block gave the Fords a 23-22 advantage. Hills followed with a kill for set point, and a Stockton service error finished the comeback, 25-23.
The third set featured another back-and-forth battle. Stockton jumped ahead 4-1, but Haverford fought back behind Frank, who delivered three early kills as the Fords eventually drew even at 6-6. Later, with Stockton leading 13-12, Haverford used a Maggie Turner kill and three consecutive Ospreys attack errors to surge in front 16-13.
The Fords remained in front at 23-20 after three kills from Frank helped Haverford establish the late advantage. Stockton, however, scored four consecutive points to reach set point at 24-23. Frank answered with another kill to level the frame at 24, but Nicole Palmer delivered consecutive kills to give Stockton the 26-24 victory.
Neither side could create much separation in the fourth. Haverford moved ahead 10-7 behind consecutive Cella kills, but Stockton battled back to tie the frame at 11. The Fords again edged ahead 18-17 following another Cella kill before the Ospreys responded with three straight points to take a 20-18 advantage. Haverford pulled even one final time at 21-21, but Stockton scored four of the final five points to take the set 25-22 and force a fifth.
The Fords quickly regained control in the deciding frame. After Stockton took a 3-2 lead, Cella tied the set with a kill before a Palmer attack error and Frank kill put Haverford ahead 5-3. A Frank-Turner block later extended the advantage to 6-4, and Marlena Kinlan's service ace sent the Fords to the changeover with an 8-5 lead.
Haverford then put the match away with a decisive closing surge. With the Fords leading 9-7, Moord delivered a kill before Olivia DeVille entered in the decider and immediately made an impact. DeVille served as Haverford rattled off four consecutive points, including her own service ace that pushed the advantage to 12-7. Cella followed with a kill, and another Stockton attack error brought up match point at 14-7. Stockton fought off two match points, but Haverford closed the door when Cella and Turner combined on a block for the final point of the 15-9 victory.
Igonin finished the nightcap with a 30-assist, 10-dig double-double, while Krotky Koeppe handed out 19 assists. Heejin Kim led the Fords with 15 digs, Chaney added 13 and Hills contributed 10. Frank and Moord each recorded six block assists as Haverford totaled 22 block assists in the victory.
Volleyball will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 12, hosting the Haverford Tri-Match at Gooding '84 Arena. The Fords will face Cairn at 11 a.m. before concluding the day against Lebanon Valley at 3 p.m. in the annual Play with Pride Match. Cairn and Lebanon Valley will meet in the neutral-site contest at 1 p.m.
