HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (4-4) received goals from Erica Pardón and Louisa Coughlin, while Lindsey Darby matched a season-high with seven saves as the Fords held off Stockton (5-3), 2-1, Thursday evening at Swan Field.
Stockton generated the majority of the early pressure, but Darby helped keep the Ospreys off the scoreboard. The Haverford goalkeeper made back-to-back saves on Meghan Phillips and Jenna Gregula late in the opening quarter before adding two more stops on Phillips early in the second.
The Fords made their opportunity count in the 26th minute, as Pardón broke the scoreless deadlock with a spectacular individual effort. Trapped along the end line, the senior flicked the ball into the air and juggled it with her stick while working her way toward the cage. As the ball dropped back to the turf, Pardón maintained possession and wrapped a shot around Stockton goalkeeper Delfina Vanelli and into the cage at 25:02. The highlight-reel tally was Pardón's fourth of the season and sent Haverford into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Stockton continued to apply pressure after the break, but the Haverford defense remained composed. Darby turned away consecutive attempts from Emmah Devlin and Jessica Bruther in the 42nd minute, keeping the one-goal advantage intact.
Haverford capitalized at the other end less than three minutes later. Following a penalty corner, Pardón fired an attempt on cage that Vanelli turned aside, but Coughlin was perfectly positioned for the rebound, knocking home the second-chance opportunity at 43:51. Coughlin's second goal of the season doubled the Scarlet and Black advantage to 2-0 entering the final quarter.
The Ospreys cut into the deficit in the 52nd minute following consecutive penalty corners. Jessica Bruther provided the service for Riley DeMarco, who found the back of the cage at 51:16 for her fifth goal of the season, trimming the Haverford lead to 2-1.
Haverford held firm over the final eight-plus minutes. The Fords prevented Stockton from recording another shot after DeMarco's goal and generated a late opportunity of their own, with Pardón forcing Vanelli into a save with just 31 seconds remaining to help close out the victory.
Stockton finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots and an 11-5 edge in penalty corners, but Haverford put six of its 10 attempts on cage. Pardón led the Fords with four shots, putting all four on target, while Morgan Reis added three attempts. Coughlin scored on her lone shot of the contest.
Darby was instrumental in the victory, matching a season-high with seven saves while allowing just one goal across 60 minutes. Vanelli made four saves for Stockton.
The Fords return to Centennial Conference action Saturday, Sept. 26, hosting No. 8 Franklin & Marshall at noon at Swan Field. The contest will serve as Haverford's Dream Crazy for Greta Game.
