Volleyball Turns Away Elizabethtown in 3-0 Sweep

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford (7-2) turned in an efficient offensive performance and showed its composure in a marathon second set, sweeping Elizabethtown (7-3), 25-19, 29-27, 25-18, Wednesday evening at Gooding Arena. Volleyball was hosting its annual Play With Pride night, celebrating Haverford's LGBTQ+ community members and supporting advocacy by and for the LGBTQ+ community on campus and within intercollegiate athletics. 

The victory marked Haverford's second consecutive sweep of Elizabethtown after the Fords also posted a 3-0 victory over the Blue Jays in Elizabethtown last September. That result snapped a three-match Elizabethtown winning streak in the series, which included a five-set battle at Gooding '84 Arena in 2024. Haverford has now won seven of the 12 meetings between the programs dating back to 2009.

Elizabeth Cella once again powered the Haverford attack, putting down a match-high 16 kills on 38 swings while hitting .289. Anna Krotky Koeppe directed the offense with 29 assists and was nearly flawless when called upon as an attacker, finishing with five kills on seven attempts without an error for a .714 hitting percentage. Krotky Koeppe also contributed six digs and a service ace.

The Fords hit .284 as a team, producing 47 kills against just 14 errors. Haverford was particularly sharp in the opening set, connecting at a .464 clip with 16 kills and only three errors on 28 attempts.

Elizabethtown held a 15-13 advantage midway through the opening frame before Haverford seized control. Fiona Moord and Cella helped spark a 6-0 run that turned the two-point deficit into a 19-15 advantage. Cella delivered three kills during the surge, while Krotky Koeppe added one of her own. The Blue Jays never pulled closer than three points the rest of the way, with Cella finishing the frame on a kill off a Krotky Koeppe feed for the 25-19 victory.

The second set provided the night's biggest test. Elizabethtown built an 18-13 lead and later held a 23-20 advantage, but the Scarlet and Black refused to concede the frame. Cella delivered a kill to make it 23-21 before consecutive Cella kills and a Gia Frank-Maggie Turner block erased a 24-21 deficit and pulled Haverford even at 24-24.

The Blue Jays earned additional set-point opportunities at 25-24 and 27-26, but Haverford answered each time. Frank leveled the set at 27-27 before another Frank kill put the Fords ahead for good. Marlee Hills then slammed home the deciding point off a Krotky Koeppe set to complete the comeback, 29-27, and give Haverford a commanding two-set advantage.

Haverford again had to work from behind in the third after Elizabethtown opened a 7-3 lead. The Fords methodically erased the deficit, with a Sierra Lever service ace tying the set at 8-8 before Cella and Krotky Koeppe combined to push Haverford in front, 11-10. The Scarlet and Black began to create separation from there, taking a 17-14 advantage behind consecutive kills from Frank and Hills.

Haverford's serving helped put the match away down the stretch. Lever's second ace of the frame extended the advantage to 20-16 before Olivia DeVille entered and delivered an ace of her own to make it 22-17. 

DeVille appeared in all three sets in a serving role, helping provide Haverford with a key option from the service line as the Fords totaled seven aces on the night. Krotky Koeppe later connected with Cella and Turner on the final two points to seal the 25-18 victory and the sweep.

Behind Cella, Moord finished with eight kills on 16 attempts for a .375 hitting percentage, while Hills and Frank added seven kills apiece. Turner contributed four block assists, with Frank adding three. Kira Chaney paced the back row with a match-high 18 digs and added two service aces, while Heejin Kim chipped in nine digs. Lever finished with two aces and seven digs.

Haverford held Elizabethtown to a .174 hitting percentage for the match, including just .070 in the final set, as the Fords returned to the win column with their second straight victory over the Blue Jays.

The Fords will return to action Saturday, Sept. 26, hosting a tri-match at Gooding '84 Arena. Volleyball will face Stevens at noon before taking on Susquehanna at 4 p.m.
