COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Haverford (3-2-2, 0-1-1 CC) was unable to overcome an early Ursinus (4-2-1, 1-1 CC) goal, as the Fords fell 1-0 in Centennial Conference action Wednesday afternoon at Patterson Field.
The Bears struck for the game's only goal in the sixth minute. After earning a corner kick, Ursinus generated the opening breakthrough at 5:48 when Josie Parson converted a feed from Taylor Pezulich to give the hosts an early 1-0 advantage.
Haverford responded by putting sustained pressure on the Ursinus goal over the remainder of the opening half. Sophia Mitchell generated the Fords' first shot on goal in the 21st minute, forcing goalkeeper Lexie Albaeck into a save. Mitchell tested Albaeck again in the 35th minute as Haverford searched for the equalizer.
The Fords continued to threaten late in the half. Emma Kirk put an attempt on frame following a Haverford corner in the 38th minute before Clare Hawley forced another Albaeck save just over two minutes later. Haverford finished the opening 45 minutes with five shots, putting four on target, while holding Ursinus to just two total attempts.
Ursinus opened the second half with more attacking pressure, but Allie Billups kept the deficit at one with a save on Cora Kim in the 55th minute. Haverford quickly turned its attention back toward the other end, where Mitchell put her third shot of the afternoon on target at 57:20, only to see Albaeck make another stop.
The Fords created another opportunity three minutes later when Cate Dugan tested Albaeck with an attempt on frame, but the Ursinus goalkeeper again denied Haverford. The Bears limited the Fords' opportunities from there, keeping Haverford without another shot over the final 29 minutes to protect the one-goal advantage.
Billups made another save on Sophia Cooper in the 73rd minute to keep Haverford within striking distance, but the Fords were unable to find the equalizer before the final whistle.
The two teams finished even with seven shots apiece, with Haverford putting six of its seven attempts on goal. Mitchell led the Fords with three shots, placing all three on target, while Dugan, Kirk and Hawley each added a shot on goal. Billups finished with three saves, while Albaeck stopped all six Haverford attempts on target to preserve the shutout. Ursinus held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Fords continue Centennial Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 26, traveling to Baltimore, Md., for a 4 p.m. matchup against (RV) Johns Hopkins.
