HAVERFORD, Pa. — Clare Hawley provided the decisive goal in the 71st minute, while Allie Billups matched a career-best with an eight-save shutout as the Haverford College women's soccer team battled past DeSales, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at Walton Field.
The Fords improved to 3-1-1 with the victory, rebounding from their first setback of the season with their fourth shutout through five matches. Haverford finished with an 18-13 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on frame.
Haverford came out firing, immediately putting the DeSales defense under pressure. Cate Dugan registered the first shot just 47 seconds into the contest and nearly put the Fords ahead in the sixth minute, rattling an attempt off the post. Emma Murray and Carly Rusak followed with chances as the Scarlet and Black generated four shots and a corner kick inside the opening nine minutes.
The Bulldogs eventually found their footing and began to test Billups, who proved equal to every challenge. After stopping Emily Mulroony in the fourth minute, Billups denied another Mulroony attempt in the 14th before making consecutive saves on Catherine Crampton and Tallia Hill as DeSales looked to swing the momentum.
Billups continued to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard as the first half progressed. She turned aside Kelsey Bedics in the 26th minute before denying Piper Brink in the 39th, giving her six saves in the opening 45 minutes. At the other end, Mia Peifer and Shiloh Ulrickson each put attempts on target, but the sides went into halftime locked in a scoreless draw.
Haverford came out of the break with another sustained wave of pressure. The Fords earned three corner kicks in the opening four minutes of the half, while Sophia Mitchell peppered the DeSales net with three shots in a span of just 32 seconds, forcing Bulldogs goalkeeper Ava Kichline into back-to-back saves.
Mitchell remained at the center of the Haverford attack throughout the second half. She generated six shots for the contest, including four on goal, and tested Kichline again in the 66th minute before forcing another save in the 70th. Emma Murray followed with an attempt on target as the Fords continued to search for the breakthrough.
The persistence finally paid off in the 71st minute as Natalie Kelly played the ball into the attacking third where she found Sofia Terry. Terry provided a crisp pass to Mitchell. who provided the setup for Hawley, who converted her second goal of the season from the center of the box to break the deadlock and give Haverford the 1-0 advantage. The tally ultimately stood as the game-winner, with Hawley making her only shot of the contest count.
With the lead secured, Haverford turned back to Billups and its defense to finish the job. The junior denied Cami Beetel in the 75th minute for her eighth and final save, while the Fords prevented DeSales from putting another attempt on target over the closing 15 minutes.
Billups finished with eight saves across 90 minutes to earn the clean sheet, including six stops during a busy opening half. The Fords' defensive unit held firm throughout the closing stages, allowing Hawley's second-half strike to stand as the difference.
Haverford now turns its attention to Centennial Conference play, welcoming Gettysburg to Walton Field on Saturday, Sept. 19. The action will start at noon.
