Women's Soccer Opens With 7-0 Rout of Penn State Abington

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore Sophia Mitchell recorded her first career hat trick as the Haverford College women's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a commanding 7-0 victory over Penn State Abington on a humid Tuesday afternoon at Walton Field.

The Fords (1-0) recorded their first 7-0 shutout victory since defeating Immaculata by the same score on Sept. 26, 2023. Mitchell, who tied for the team lead with three goals during her rookie campaign, matched that total in Tuesday's opener while registering Haverford's first hat trick since Keira Prince accomplished the feat at Muhlenberg on Oct. 8, 2024.

Haverford controlled play from the opening whistle, eventually finishing with a 39-4 advantage in shots. Penn State Abington goalkeeper Sam Ridler kept the contest scoreless through the opening 20 minutes before Devyn Telleen broke through with the season's first goal at the 21:03 mark.

Molly Morris doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute, finishing a feed from Alejandra Diaz for her first goal of the campaign. Mitchell joined the scoring column at 40:11, giving the Fords a 3-0 advantage. Kate Peters added another goal with just 19 seconds remaining before halftime, converting off an assist from Morris to send Haverford into the break with a four-goal cushion.

The Scarlet and Black continued to apply pressure after halftime. Clare Hawley pushed the lead to 5-0 in the 56th minute before Mitchell took over during the final stages of the contest.

Mitchell collected her second goal at 74:48 and completed the hat trick just 2 minutes, 49 seconds later, finding the back of the net off a pass from Hawley. The sophomore finished the evening with game highs of nine shots, seven shots on goal and three goals.

Mitchell was one of five different Fords to score in the victory. Morris contributed a goal and an assist, while Hawley also finished with three points on one goal and one assist. Telleen placed all four of her shots on goal, while Carly Rusak added seven shots, including four on frame.

Haverford's defense held Penn State Abington without a shot on goal and did not concede a corner kick. Allie Billups and rookie Braidyn Recker split the goalkeeping duties, each playing 45 minutes to combine for the shutout.

The Fords return to Walton Field on Friday, hosting Arcadia at 5 p.m. as early season action continues for Women's Soccer.
