Baseball Slams 11 Homers in Dominant Doubleheader Sweep of Dickinson

DeCillis set the tone at the plate and on the bases, Cohen authored a complete-game shutout, and Haverford’s seniors powered a sweep of Dickinson in Sunday’s finale

HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College baseball team (14-22, 8-10 CC) closed out the regular season in emphatic fashion on Sunday afternoon at Kannerstein Field, sweeping a Centennial Conference doubleheader from Dickinson (20-17-1, 6-11-1 CC) behind a blend of dominant pitching, record-setting speed, and a barrage of home runs. The Fords outscored the Red Devils 25-6 across the twin bill, launching 11 home runs on the day while celebrating a historic milestone from senior Mauro DeCillis, who broke the Haverford program single-season stolen bases record and matched the Centennial Conference record with 42 after four steals in the nightcap.

Haverford 9, Dickinson 0

Haverford opened the afternoon with one of its most complete performances of the season, as senior ace Sam Cohen delivered a masterful complete-game shutout. The right-hander scattered just five hits and one walk across nine innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters while facing just 33 hitters to improve to 5-2 on the year. The Fords wasted no time backing their ace. DeCillis ignited the offense with a solo home run to left-center in the first inning, while Luke Treese followed with a solo shot in the second to double the early advantage.

After a brief lull, Haverford broke the game open in the fifth inning. Ryan Field led off the frame with a solo home run before DeCillis struck again, launching a two-run blast to right-center to extend the lead to 5-0. The Scarlet and Black continued to apply pressure late. Will Schroen brought home a run with a sacrifice bunt in the seventh, and the eighth inning featured more fireworks as Miles Prusek drilled a two-run homer before Treese added his second long ball of the afternoon to cap the scoring for the hosts.

DeCillis and Treese each finished with two home runs, while Prusek and Field also went deep as part of a six-homer outburst. Jackson Sgro added two hits and a run scored, and Sammy Angel reached base three times with two walks and a run scored. Cohen took care of the rest, cruising through the final innings to secure the shutout and send the Fords into the nightcap with momentum firmly in hand in a career-defining performance in his final start for the Scarlet and Black.

Haverford 16, Dickinson 6 (7 innings)

If game one showcased pitching dominance, game two turned into a celebration of offense and some Haverford history. DeCillis etched his name into the record book with a four-steal performance, bringing his season total to 42 to break the program's single-season stolen base record and match the Centennial Conference single-season mark. He set the tone immediately, singling and swiping second in the first inning before adding three more steals by the fifth.

After Dickinson briefly grabbed a 1-0 lead, Treese once again flipped the script with a two-run home run to right-center. The Red Devils stayed within striking distance early, but Haverford's lineup proved relentless in the friendly confines of Kannerstein Field. DeCillis added to his milestone day with another two-run home run in the fourth, and the Fords broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Schroen launched a two-run shot to left, and a Dickinson throwing error on DeCillis' milestone steal brought home another run. Sgro punctuated the rally with a two-run homer to make it 10-2.

Dickinson mounted a brief push in the sixth, but Haverford answered with a six-run bottom half to put the game away. The decisive blow came off the bat of Prusek, who crushed a towering, no-doubt grand slam to left-center to highlight the outburst. Senior stalwart Ethan Goldstein earned the win on the mound, tossing 5.1 innings, while DeCillis capped a perfect 4-for-4 performance with four runs scored and three RBIs to go along with his record-breaking work on the basepaths.

Seniors Colin Lewis, Aidan O'Sullivan, and Drew Doyle combined for the final 1.2 innings as the Fords closed out a 10-run rule victory after seven frames, solidifying a twinbill in which each senior was a standout contributor.
