SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team (12-21, 6-9 CC) secured a Centennial Conference victory at Clothier Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon, taking down Swarthmore (22-13, 7-8 CC) by an 11-3 final score. The Fords used a disciplined approach at the plate and another strong starting performance from Sam Cohen to distance themselves early from their rivals.
Haverford wasted no time establishing a presence, plating five runs in the top of the first inning. The rally began with Mauro DeCillis, who reached after being hit by a pitch and advanced on two wild pitches. Sam Dorian drove him in with an RBI single to left field to open the scoring.
After two walks and another hit batsman loaded the bases, Ryan Field and Will Schroen each drew bases-loaded walks to extend the lead to 3-0. Sammy Angel then capped the frame with a two-run single to right, providing an early cushion before Swarthmore even came to the plate.
The Fords added two runs in both the second and third innings, capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hitting. In the second, Dorian picked up his second RBI of the day with a single that scored DeCillis. Luke Treese later added a sacrifice bunt to push the lead to 7-0. In the third, Angel scored on a wild pitch, and DeCillis crossed the plate following a Swarthmore throwing error during a pickoff attempt, making it 9-0.
The Garnet finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth when Nathaniel Kittredge launched a two-run home run to left field. Swarthmore added another run in the seventh inning when Brad Johnston doubled to left, scoring Aidan Sullivan, who had reached on a walk. However, the Swarthmore offense struggled to find consistency, leaving 14 runners on base throughout the contest.
Haverford added insurance again in the top of the ninth as Sammy Angel delivered a two-run double to left-center, scoring both Field and Schroen to finalize the 11-3 scoreline. Angel finished the day with 4 RBIs on a 2-for-4 performance. Ryan Field scored 3 runs after drawing three walks. DeCillis stole a pair of bases as he now has 37 on the season as he looks to chase down Harry Genth '25 single-season mark of 40 set during the 2024 season.
Cohen earned the win (4-3), pitching six solid innings while allowing just two runs on five hits and striking out four. David Bertz closed the door in the ninth, striking out one to seal the victory.
Swarthmore's Ezra Schwartz took the loss, lasting only two-thirds of an inning in the opening frame. Gabe Elliott and Jackson Clemens helped settle things for the hosts, combining for 4.1 innings of hitless relief.
Haverford picked up half of a Hood Trophy point by virtue of the road victory, and currently trails the series by just half a point. Baseball will now conclude the Hood Trophy home-and-home series with the Garnet on Friday at Kannerstein Field. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
