Franklin & Marshall Outlasts Baseball in Slugfest, 15-11

LANCASTER, Pa. — Despite a resilient late-inning comeback bid that included six runs in the final three innings, the Haverford College baseball team fell 15-11 to Franklin & Marshall in a wild contest on Tuesday afternoon at Penn Medicine Park, home of the Atlantic League's Lancaster Stormers.

The Fords (7-12, 1-2 CC) combined for 11 hits but were undone by a Diplomats (13-8, 1-2 CC) offense that used an eight-run second inning to seize control of the contest.

Haverford jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. After Jackson Sgro drew a two-out walk, Prusek launched a towering two-run home run to right field. The Fords extended the advantage to 4-0 in the second inning as Jack Phiel and Kaden Van Kempen scored on a Sam Dorian groundout and a Prusek bases-loaded walk.

The momentum shifted in the bottom of the second. The Diplomats exploded for eight runs on seven hits as the rally was highlighted by a Matt Hollender grand slam to right field that gave F&M a lead it would not relinquish.

Trailing 12-5 entering the seventh, the Fords began to chip away.  Luke Treese drove in a run with a single to left-center before Mauro DeCillis scored on a balk. Van Kempen added a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 12-8. The Fords continued the pressure in the eighth as Sgro roped an RBI double and Ryan Field added a sacrifice fly to bring Haverford within just two runs at 12-10.

Franklin & Marshall answered with three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, fueled by an Owen Woodward two-run double and a Tommy Truzzolino RBI single.

Sgro added his second RBI double of the day in the ninth to score Van Kempen, but the rally ended there with two runners stranded.

Prusek finished 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored, and three RBIs. Sgro nearly mirrored that production with a 2-for-4 effort including two doubles and two RBIs.

Will Schroen and DeCillis also recorded multi-hit games for the Fords, who recorded six extra-base hits

Will O'Connor (3-1) earned the win for the Diplomats, tossing four innings of one-run relief, striking out a pair of the 16 batters he faced. In a bullpen game, the Fords used eight pitchers, with David Bertz and Leo Barta each tossing a scoreless frame.

Haverford will now return to action Friday, April 3 to wrap up the home-and-home series with the Diplomats at Kannerstein Field. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
