Calm, Composed and Clinical: Cricket Secures first win of Spring Season

HAVERFORD, Pa. — The second match of the season sent a clear message: the Fords were hungry for a win.

Facing Princeton for the first time, Haverford stepped onto Cope Field on a particularly windy Saturday, ready to build on the fight they showed in the opener.

Captain Ishpuneet Singh won the toss and chose to bowl—a decision that paid off almost immediately. Sophomore Nihaal Kochar and junior Sanil Kagawala opened the attack with discipline and intent, keeping things tight from the outset. The breakthrough came in the third over, when Kochar bowled one of Princeton's openers. Soon after, Singh struck as well, and by the end of five overs, Princeton was reeling at 11-2—exactly the start Haverford needed.

And they didn't let up.

Relentless pressure followed: wicket after wicket, over after over. Sophomore Vivaan Hingad led the charge with a standout performance, picking up his first wicket. By the ninth over, he had three quick wickets to leave Princeton at 20-5. Tight bowling and aggressive fielding defined the innings.

At this point, two experienced Princeton recruits briefly made things interesting, adding 23 runs together to steady the innings. But Haverford stayed composed and stuck to their plan, eventually bowling Princeton out for 57 in 16.1 overs.

The standout performance came from Hingad, who finished with a brilliant five for 12—his first five-wicket haul. He was well supported across the field, including a sharp run-out completed by Agastya Singh. Another highlight was freshman Rasik Waikar taking over wicketkeeping duties midway through the innings, allowing Agastya to step in and bowl a few overs—a small but meaningful moment of flexibility for the team.

Chasing 58 in 20 overs, the challenge was less about skill and more about mindset. The Fords had to stay focused and avoid complacency.

Kagawala and Kochar opened the innings, giving Haverford a steady start before Kochar fell to a catch in the deep. Agastya Singh came in next, but soon after, Kagawala was bowled, bringing Waikar to the crease. With two relatively new batsmen in the middle, there was a brief pause as they settled in.

Around the ninth over, someone from the pavilion noted that there hadn't been a single boundary all game. Almost on cue, Waikar drove one to the boundary. A couple of overs later, he did it again, drawing loud cheers from the team and spectators.

From there, the chase was calm and controlled. At the end of 13 overs, Haverford needed just two runs to win. With a quick run between the wickets, Waikar and Agastya wrapped up the game.

Haverford finished at 58-3, securing its first win of the season.

It was a performance built on discipline: tight bowling, minimal extras, and sharp fielding. If last week's challenge was believing they hadn't lost, this week's was believing they hadn't already won—and the team rose to both. With growing confidence and a willingness to experiment, the Fords showed not just skill, but maturity.

A complete performance and a well-earned win. Haverford Cricket hopes to carry this momentum into its next game on Saturday, April 11 against Germantown Cricket Club.
