Baseball Falls in Pair of Pitching Duels at No. 5 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. - The Haverford College baseball team (5-8) took one of the nation's top programs to the brink on Saturday, but No. 5 Salisbury held off the Fords in both ends of a tightly contested doubleheader at Williams Stadium on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The hosts secured a 4-2 decision in the opener before edging out a 2-1 victory in game two. Despite the losses, Haverford (5-8) received a pair of strong pitching performances and limited a high-powered Salisbury (13-5) lineup to just six total runs across 18 innings.

Game 1: Salisbury 4, Haverford 2

The Fords struck first in the second inning as Mauro DeCillis delivered an RBI double to right field, plating Cole Roman for a 1-0 lead. Salisbury answered immediately in the home half, tying the game on a Trent Waire RBI double.

The game remained even until the fifth inning when Salisbury used a sequence of three run-scoring plays to take control. A bunt single from Mickey Haynes started the rally before Nathan Tondreault followed with an RBI single through the right side. Jackson Inman capped the inning with an RBI fielder's choice to push the lead to 4-1.

Sam Cohen was strong through five innings, striking out seven without issuing a walk, but was tagged for all four runs in the decisive fifth. Haverford's bullpen steadied the game from there. Ethan Goldstein fired two scoreless innings without allowing a hit, while Adam Naegelen added a clean eighth to keep the deficit at two.

The Fords showed late life in the eighth as Luke Treese lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Will Schroen to push the visitors a bit closer at 4-2. However, Salisbury closer Bryce Sterling shut the door in the ninth to secure the save.

Jackson Sgro led Haverford offensively with two of the team's three hits, while Mauro DeCillis laced the lone extra-base hit with his RBI double in the second.

Game 2: Salisbury 2, Haverford 1

The late afternoon contest followed a similar script, with pitching again taking center stage for both squads.

Haverford loaded the bases with walks against the ledger of Jack Rucker, but stranded teh bases loaded. Salisbury jumped ahead in the first inning on a Jay Newton RBI double and added what proved to be the game-winning run in the third on a sacrifice fly from Jackson Inman.

Alex Jenkinson matched the challenge, delivering a quality start with six innings of two-run ball. He allowed five hits and struck out three, keeping the Fords within striking distance throughout in a stellar showing on the mound.

The bullpen continued the trend of strong relief work. Andrew Schindler worked 1.2 scoreless innings, navigating two walks without allowing a hit, and Drew Doyle recorded a crucial strikeout to end the eighth, keeping Salisbury to just the one-run lead.

Haverford broke through in the top half the eighth inning when Jackson Sgro roped a leadoff double and scored on a Ryan Field groundout, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Fords put pressure on Salisbury late, but Sterling again closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his second save of the day.

Baseball now continues its non-conference slate with a busy week of matchups before opening CC play against McDaniel at home next Saturday. First up on the docket for Haverford is a rescheduled contest against Lebanon Valley on Monday March 23, as the Fords and Dutchmen will faceoff at 3:30 p.m. from Kannerstein Field.
