HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College men's lacrosse team (6-2) secured a decisive 10–5 victory over Mary Washington (4-3) on Saturday afternoon at Swan Field. The Fords seized control early with a 3–1 first-quarter lead and extended the advantage with another three-goal showing in the second. The Scarlet and Black controlled the ground-ball battle, collecting 41 compared to the Eagles' 37. Although Mary Washington mounted a brief push in the third quarter, Haverford's defense shut down the visitors in the final stanza to secure the five-goal win.
Reid Tietjen led the offensive charge with two goals and three assists, while Will Weinstein recorded a hat trick, including one extra-man tally. Nils Bergstrom anchored the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. At the faceoff stripe, Max Esteban went 7-for-17, caused a turnover, and scooped up a team-high six ground balls. In goal, Mac Broaddus was steady throughout, turning aside 12 shots for the Scarlet and Black.
Mary Washington opened the scoring at the 11:18 mark of the first quarter when Reece Stone finished a feed from Tanner Boone. Haverford answered midway through the period as Philip Passalaqua tied the game with an unassisted strike at 4:05. Hunter Rexford then gave the hosts their first lead at 1:47, scoring the first goal of his collegiate career. The Fords capped the quarter in dramatic fashion when JT Anderson found the back of the net with just 13 seconds remaining, sending Haverford into the second period with a 3–1 advantage.
The Scarlet and Black built on that momentum early in the second quarter. Braeden Hulett opened the frame with a goal at 14:19 off a pass from Mac Grubb, before the Fords capitalized on a man-up opportunity when Weinstein scored at 8:15, assisted by Tietjen. Late in the half, Weinstein produced another goal with just 10 seconds remaining, set up by Turner Elliott. Mary Washington responded seconds later as Jacob Fowler scored with four seconds left in the period off an assist from Stone, but Haverford still carried a 6–2 lead into halftime.
Mary Washington surged back in the third quarter. James Milligan struck first at 9:42, assisted by Boone, before Antonio Zeno added another at 8:18 to trim the deficit. Vince Reaver later converted a feed from A.J. Lembo with 4:18 remaining, bringing the Eagles within a goal. The Fords quickly halted the momentum when Tietjen answered at 2:22 off an assist from Blake Donnellan, restoring the Haverford lead heading into the final quarter.
Haverford sealed the victory with a strong defensive and offensive effort in the fourth. Weinstein opened the scoring at 12:52, with a behind-the-back goal, assisted by Tietjen following a failed clear by Mary Washington. Tietjen then added a goal of his own at 6:04, assisted by Colin Hulett, before Nick Snyder closed the scoring at 3:52 on a pass from Tietjen. The Eagles struggled to break through down the stretch as the Scarlet and Black maintained control to secure the 10–5 triumph.
Haverford will now turn its attention to Centennial Conference play, traveling to Westminster, Md., to face McDaniel on Saturday, March 21. Opening faceoff against the Green Terror is scheduled for noon.
