On Cloud Nine: Softball’s Ninth Straight Win Seals Program-Best Start

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Haverford College softball team (9-1) is off to a program-record start in 2026, sweeping a pair of games on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Blackburn and a 4-2 victory against Regis (Mass.) at Legends Way Fields. The Fords capped their stint at The Spring Games with nine wins in their first 10 contests, marking the best start in program history.

Haverford 4, Blackburn 1

Haverford used timely hitting and a strong pitching performance to control the contest from the outset. The Fords tallied nine hits while limiting the Beavers to just one run.

Haverford struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Jocelyn Leal reached base and later scored when Lauren Martin delivered an RBI single to left field, giving the Fords an early 1-0 lead.

The Fords extended their advantage in the third inning. After Kyra Van Denburgh and Leal reached safely, Shelby Preisser lined a single to center field that drove in two runs as both Leal and Van Denburgh scored, stretching the lead to 3-0.

Haverford added another insurance run in the fifth inning as Martin again came through at the plate. Her second RBI single of the afternoon brought home Leal for a 4-0 cushion.

Blackburn broke through in the sixth inning when Mailee Schoen doubled to right field to score Kenadee Frey and cut the deficit to 4-1. The Beavers threatened to add more, but Clarissa Smith was summoned for the save opportunity and set down Blackburn in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Kaleigh Bodak improved to 3-0 on the season, tossing 5.1 innings while allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Smith entered in relief and closed the door, recording the final five outs to earn her second save of the year.

Leal paced the Haverford offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring three of the Fords' four runs. Martin finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Van Denburgh added two hits and a run scored. Preisser contributed a key two-run single in the third inning.

Haverford's defense backed its pitchers throughout the contest, allowing just six Blackburn hits and stranding nine runners on base.

Haverford 4, Regis (Mass.) 2

Haverford totaled 10 hits against the Pride and used a decisive three-run fifth inning to erase an early deficit and secure the victory.

The Fords struck first in the opening frame when Shelby Preisser lined a double to right-center field that brought home Kyra Van Denburgh for a 1-0 advantage.

Regis responded in the middle innings to take a brief lead. A sacrifice fly from Mya Gaspie in the second inning allowed Samantha Kelepouris to score and tie the contest at 1-1. The Pride then moved in front during the third inning when Francesca Licata delivered an RBI single to give Regis a 2-1 edge.

Haverford answered with its biggest inning of the afternoon in the fifth. Grace Stowe opened the rally with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jocelyn Leal to even the score. Preisser then delivered again with a double to left-center field that plated Van Denburgh, who had singled through the left side, putting the Fords back in front. Moments later, Abby Litchfield followed with a single up the middle to bring home Preisser and extend the lead to 4-2.

The Haverford pitching staff handled the rest. After Sophia Faruol started the game and allowed two runs over the first two innings, Lauren Lamme entered in relief and shut down the Pride offense. Lamme tossed five scoreless innings, surrendering just two hits while striking out two and walking four to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the season.

Van Denburgh paced the Haverford offense with a 3-for-3 performance while scoring two runs. Preisser finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Litchfield added an RBI single. Martin, Addie Sapirstein, Zoe Friedman, and Grace Stowe each contributed hits as part of the Fords' 10-hit effort.

Defensively, Haverford played a clean game in the field, committing no errors while limiting Regis to five hits.

Through 10 games, Haverford has been firing on all cylinders offensively with a .406 team batting average and a .992 OPS. The Fords have totaled 80 runs, 116 hits, and 22 doubles for 151 total bases. In the circle, Haverford pitchers have compiled a 2.97 ERA with 44 strikeouts across 68.1 innings.

After a historic start to the season in Central Florida, the Fords return to action against Penn State Brandywine on Tuesday, March 14. Haverford will travel to Media for a pair of matchups scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
