LANCASTER, Pa. — The fifth-seeded Haverford College field hockey team fell 2-1 to fourth-seeded Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday night at Tylus Field in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament. Erica Pardón scored in the second frame for the Fords (10-9), and Steph Ionescu made eight saves, but a fourth-quarter goal sent the Diplomats (14-4) on to the semifinals.
Franklin & Marshall took the lead with 4:18 left in the first quarter when Caitlin Hoover scored off an assist from Megan Dadio. Haverford threatened in the closing seconds of the period when Poppy Swallow's penalty corner led to two shots. The Diplomats blocked Pardón's attempt, and Morgan Reis sent a menacing follow-up just wide.
Pardón tested goalkeeper Meghan Dole early in the second quarter before pulling the Fords even on their next penalty corner. Brynn Bickel inserted the ball, and Louisa Coughlin set up Pardón with an entry pass for her 15th goal of the season with 10:30 left in the half. Ionescu turned aside Ava Lofgren later in the quarter to send Haverford into halftime tied at 1-1.
The Diplomats controlled possession after the break, outshooting Haverford 8-0 and earning seven penalty corners in the third quarter. Ionescu, the reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week, stopped Hoover less than three minutes into the half and recovered to deny Hannah Fitzgerald two seconds later. She added a save on Bella Konchar before the Haverford defense turned away three penalty corners in an 18-second span.
Ionescu stopped three more shots in the opening four minutes of the fourth quarter, including attempts by Lofgren and Fitzgerald just 15 seconds apart. Haverford had a chance to take the lead with just over nine minutes left, but the Diplomats blocked Coughlin's shot off a Bickel penalty corner.
Franklin & Marshall finally broke through with 7:52 remaining when Hoover found Fitzgerald for the go-ahead goal. Ionescu denied Dadio a little more than two minutes later for her seventh save of the half, but the Fords could not put another shot on goal.
Franklin & Marshall held a 24-6 advantage in shots and a 14-3 edge in penalty corners. The Fords took five of their six shots before halftime, while the Diplomats outshot Haverford 17-1 and earned 11 penalty corners after the break. Ionescu made seven of her eight saves in the second half. Pardón led Haverford with four shots and put both of the Fords' shots on goal.
Haverford closed the 2026 season with 10 wins, including six in Centennial play. The Fords earned their third straight trip to the conference playoffs with a 2-0 shutout at No. 14 Swarthmore in the regular-season finale. The Fords will be without a talented senior class next fall but look to have a strong core in place to make it four consecutive CC appearances in 2027.
Franklin & Marshall now advances to a Thursday semifinal against top-seeded Johns Hopkins. The other semifinal will match third seeded Ursinus and second seeded Swarthmore.
