Meyers' First Career Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Eastern, 1-0, on Homecoming

HAVERFORD, Pa. – With a lively Homecoming crowd providing the backdrop on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Walton Field, the Haverford College women's soccer team delivered a 1-0 victory over local rival Eastern. First-year Reese Meyers supplied the decisive finish early in the second half, while Allie Billups made five saves to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. The Fords improved to 5-3-2 overall with the victory, while Eastern fell to 4-5-1.

Haverford continued its recent success against the Eagles, earning its fourth consecutive shutout victory in the series. The Scarlet and Black have outscored Eastern 15-0 across those four meetings, following wins in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Neither side could break through during an evenly contested opening half, with each team recording five shots. Eastern generated a pair of early corner kicks, but the Haverford defense blocked attempts from Corrine Myers and Tia Argento to turn away the initial pressure.

The Fords tested Eastern goalkeeper Faith Leake in the fifth minute, as Emma Murray put an attempt on target. Clare Hawley also forced a stop midway through the period, while Billups answered with saves against Dolciana Escobar and Molly Schellpeper late in the half to send the teams into the intermission scoreless.

Haverford came out with renewed pressure after the break, earning two corner kicks in the opening three minutes of the second half. Meyers forced a save at 48:03 before finding the breakthrough less than two minutes later. At 49:50, Hawley threaded a perfectly-placed through ball to Meyers, who slotted her finish perfectly past Leake for her first goal of the season. The composed strike gave the Homecoming crowd reason to celebrate and put the Fords ahead for good.

Haverford continued to seek an insurance goal, with Hawley sending a header wide in the 55th minute and Cate Dugan forcing saves in the 60th and 73rd minutes. At the other end, Billups and the Haverford defense stood firm as Eastern searched for an equalizer.

Billups denied Mia Zucker in the 69th minute and Kate Malcolm in the 75th before collecting her final save on an Emily Monforto attempt at 83:31. The Fords held Eastern without another shot over the remaining minutes to secure the Homecoming triumph.

Haverford finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Dugan paced the Fords with three attempts, while Meyers, Hawley and Molly Morris each registered two. Leake finished with five saves for Eastern, which held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Fords return to Centennial Conference action Wednesday, Oct. 7, traveling to nearby Bryn Mawr for a 4 p.m. kickoff before returning home on Saturday, October 10 for a showdown with Dickinson at noon.
