Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight, Sweeping Past Shorewomen

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team (14-3, 5-1 CC) earned its fifth consecutive victory Wednesday evening, sweeping visiting Washington College (13-7, 3-3 CC), 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-12), at Gooding '84 Arena.

The Fords improved to 11-2 at home behind an efficient offensive performance, collecting 43 kills against just eight attack errors for a .357 hitting percentage. Haverford capped the sweep by hitting .452 without an attack error in the final set.

Elizabeth Cella led the Scarlet and Black with 16 kills on .371 hitting, adding six digs and two service aces. Fiona Moord contributed nine kills on .471 hitting and four blocks, while Gia Frank supplied six kills and three blocks. Marlee Hills added five kills without an attack error, hitting .385 with three blocks.

Anna Krotky Koeppe directed the offense with 34 assists, four aces and six digs. Kira Chaney anchored the defense with a match-high 15 digs, while Sierra Lever added nine.

Washington College opened the first set with a 3-1 lead before three consecutive Frank kills helped Haverford move ahead 5-3. The Fords soon created separation, stretching an 8-5 advantage to 11-5 behind kills from Moord and Hills and a Moord solo block.

Back-to-back Moord kills helped extend the cushion to 14-6, and Cella later pushed the lead to 16-7. The Shorewomen answered with a rally that trimmed the deficit to 18-14, but a Maggie Turner kill halted their momentum. Haverford regained control down the stretch, with Moord and Hills combining for a block before Moord's final kill secured the 25-16 decision.

The Shorewomen again started quickly in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead. Cella delivered consecutive kills to help bring Haverford back before the Fords seized control with a five-point run on Frank's serve. An ace from Frank, a Moord kill and a block by Moord and Hills helped turn an 8-7 deficit into a 12-8 advantage.

Hills and Cella added kills as Haverford extended its lead to 16-11, and a Cella ace later made it 20-13. Washington College rallied to within 22-19, prompting a Haverford timeout. Cella answered with a kill out of the stoppage, and Dasha Igonin eventually closed the 25-20 victory with an ace.

Haverford dominated the third set from the outset. Two Cella kills and another from Koeppe opened the frame, with Cella adding two more finishes as the Fords built a 5-1 lead.

Leading 6-3, the Scarlet and Black broke the set open with seven consecutive points. Koeppe recorded three straight aces before Frank and Cella added kills. Following a Washington College timeout, Koeppe delivered another ace as Haverford surged ahead 13-3.

Lolly Adair, Moord and Hills contributed kills as the advantage continued to grow. Cella powered the offense down the stretch, helping the Fords build a 22-9 cushion. Adair added another kill before Frank's solo block brought up match point. Cella finished the sweep with an ace for the 25-12 victory.

The Fords held advantages in kills (43-26), aces (8-3) and blocks (8-2), while limiting Washington College to .126 hitting. Izzy Diehl paced the Shorewomen with 12 kills and eight digs, while Kaysie Lynch contributed nine digs and nine assists.

Haverford travels to Dickinson on Saturday, Oct. 24, for another Centennial Conference matchup. First serve in Carlisle, Pa., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
