Field Hockey Stifled by Bryn Mawr, 1-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (9-7, 5-3 CC) suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to visiting Bryn Mawr (11-4, 5-3 CC) Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference action at Swan Field. The contest also served as Haverford field hockey's Antisemitism Awareness Game.

The Scarlet and Black turned in a strong defensive performance, limiting Bryn Mawr to a single shot over 60 minutes while producing a 7-1 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in penalty corners. A late opening-quarter goal from Sydney Dues ultimately proved to be the difference, as Haverford continued to press for an equalizer against an Owls defensive unit that held firm through the final whistle.

The Fords were particularly effective following halftime, outshooting Bryn Mawr 5-0 over the final 30 minutes. Haverford placed four attempts on target during the contest, but Owls goalkeeper Sydney Wright turned away each opportunity to preserve the shutout.

The result moved both teams to 5-3 in Centennial Conference play, with the Scarlet and Black remaining in the thick of the postseason race as the regular season enters its final stretch.

Haverford began to establish its attacking presence late in the opening quarter, earning consecutive penalty corners in the 13th and 14th minutes. Brynn Bickel initiated the first opportunity at 12:46, leading to a blocked attempt from Louisa Coughlin eight seconds later. The Fords earned another corner at 13:02 but could not convert as the Owls worked to clear the danger.

Bryn Mawr responded with its lone penalty corner of the evening at 13:27, capitalizing just 13 seconds later. Following the insertion, Nadine Roddy sent a ball toward the cage that deflected off the stick of Dues and into the back of the cage at 13:40, giving the Owls a 1-0 advantage on Dues' first goal of the season.

The tally proved to be Bryn Mawr's only shot of the contest, as Haverford's defensive unit prevented the Owls from generating another attempt over the remaining 46:20 of regulation.

The second quarter featured a more methodical battle for possession, with both teams working to establish opportunities in the attacking third.

Haverford generated the lone shot of the period in the 27th minute, when Erica Pardón had an attempt blocked at 26:19. The Fords earned a penalty corner just six seconds later, with Alya Bakir taking the insertion, but Bryn Mawr held firm to maintain its one-goal advantage.

The Scarlet and Black entered halftime trailing 1-0 despite holding a 2-1 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Haverford emerged from the intermission with renewed urgency, producing its strongest sustained attacking stretch of the evening during the third quarter. The Fords earned another penalty corner at 32:19, with Bickel again handling the insertion. Although the initial opportunity did not produce a shot, Haverford continued to press forward.

Lily Gover registered the Scarlet and Black's first shot on goal at 35:26, forcing Wright into her first save of the contest. The Fords continued to push for the equalizer, with Pardón testing Wright at 43:06. The Bryn Mawr goalkeeper turned away the attempt, but Haverford maintained its attacking pressure. Just eight seconds later, Alice Stein fired another shot on goal, forcing Wright into a third save of the quarter. The sequence highlighted Haverford's continued persistence in the attacking third, but the Owls carried their narrow advantage into the final period.

The Scarlet and Black continued to generate offensive opportunities in the final 15 minutes, looking to break through against a Bryn Mawr defense that had spent much of the second half under pressure. Stein produced Haverford's first chance of the fourth quarter at 47:40, sending an attempt wide of the cage. The Fords earned another penalty corner at 50:23, with Bickel again initiating the opportunity, but the Owls managed to clear the danger.

As the final minutes approached, Haverford continued searching for the equalizer. Pardón produced one final scoring opportunity at 56:49, putting an attempt on target that Wright turned aside to preserve the 1-0 advantage. The Scarlet and Black continued to battle through the closing moments, but Bryn Mawr held on to secure the conference victory.

Pardón paced Haverford with three shots, including two on goal, while Stein added two attempts, with one on target. Gover registered one shot on goal, and Coughlin contributed an additional attempt.

Wright finished with four saves for Bryn Mawr, while Haverford goalkeeper Steph Ionescu played all 60 minutes without recording a save, as the Owls managed just one shot on goal.

The Fords' defensive effort was particularly impressive following the opening goal, with Bryn Mawr failing to register another shot over the final 46:20 of regulation. Haverford outshot the Owls 5-0 in the second half, including a 3-0 advantage in the third quarter, while generating two penalty corners after halftime.

The Scarlet and Black remain firmly in the Centennial Conference postseason picture at 5-3 in league play, with the final stretch of the regular season providing important opportunities to strengthen their position in the standings.

Haverford returns to action Saturday, Oct. 24, traveling to Baltimore Md., to face No. 9 Johns Hopkins in another pivotal Centennial Conference matchup. The contest is slated for noon, with the Fords looking to bounce back against the nationally ranked Blue Jays as the postseason race continues.
