PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Haverford College men's soccer team (10-3-1) wrapped up its 2026 nonconference schedule with a 3-1 victory over Manhattanville (9-3-3) Tuesday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field, as Josh Brown recorded his first two goals of the season with a first-half brace before Charles Sharp added a late insurance tally.
Brown found the back of the net twice in the opening 45 minutes, helping the Scarlet and Black build a 2-0 halftime advantage. Manhattanville cut the deficit in half early in the second period, but Sharp struck in the 87th minute to secure the victory and send the Fords back into Centennial Conference play on a winning note.
Haverford wasted little time establishing an attacking presence, as Thomas Vanni tested Manhattanville goalkeeper Dwayne Brown II just 70 seconds into the contest. Connor Gustafson followed with an attempt wide in the second minute before Vanni forced another save in the ninth.
The Fords continued to press, with Sam Kinsey nearly breaking the deadlock in the 21st minute. Kinsey's attempt struck the crossbar, and Sharp followed with a blocked shot as Haverford maintained pressure in the attacking third.
The breakthrough arrived at the 23:03 mark following a Haverford free kick. Vanni sent a low, driven ball toward the back post, where Brown was waiting to finish the opportunity off a feed from Sharp, putting the Scarlet and Black ahead 1-0 with his first goal of the season.
Manhattanville responded with a stretch of attacking pressure, but Haverford goalkeeper Will Ossmann was equal to the challenge. The first-year keeper turned away Tiernan McLaughlin in the 29th minute before denying Marco Palushaj less than a minute later to preserve the one-goal lead.
The Fords continued to generate opportunities as halftime approached. Gustafson sent an attempt wide in the 40th minute, while Haverford earned three corner kicks over the final six minutes of the period.
The Scarlet and Black capitalized on the final of those opportunities in the 44th minute. Park delivered a corner kick into the box, where Brown rose to meet the service and directed a perfectly placed header into the net at 43:37. His second goal of the afternoon doubled Haverford's advantage to 2-0 heading into the break.
Manhattanville emerged from halftime with renewed urgency, generating several early opportunities. Alec Pineda sent an attempt high in the 48th minute before forcing Ossmann into a save in the 51st.
The Valiants eventually broke through at the 51:24 mark. Following a Manhattanville corner kick, Aiden Sivio and Manuel Morales combined to set up McLaughlin, who found the back of the net to trim Haverford's advantage to 2-1.
The Fords looked to respond immediately, with Vanni seeing attempts blocked in the 53rd and 55th minutes. Manhattanville continued to apply pressure, however, as Palushaj had an attempt blocked before sending another shot wide in the 69th minute.
Ossmann remained instrumental in protecting the narrow advantage, turning away Pineda in the 69th minute for his fourth save of the afternoon.
Haverford continued to search for an insurance goal as the contest entered its final stages. Austin Branch saw an attempt blocked in the 75th minute, while Sharp sent a shot wide in the 81st.
The Valiants continued to threaten at the opposite end, but attempts from Morales and Luis Del Riego missed the target as the Scarlet and Black held firm defensively.
Haverford finally put the contest out of reach in the 87th minute. Another Park corner kick created a scramble inside the penalty area, with the ball ricocheting between players before falling to Sharp. The forward hammered home the loose ball at 86:27 for his 10th goal of the season, restoring the Fords' two-goal cushion and sealing the 3-1 road victory.
The Scarlet and Black finished with 13 shots, including five on goal, while Manhattanville held a 16-13 advantage in total attempts. Haverford earned five corner kicks, all in the opening half, compared to four for the Valiants.
Brown made the most of his opportunities, converting both of his shots on goal for his first two tallies of the season. Sharp finished with a goal and an assist on three attempts, while Vanni led Haverford with four shots, including two on target.
Ossmann played the full 90 minutes in goal, making four saves to earn the victory. Brown II finished with two stops for Manhattanville, while McLaughlin accounted for the Valiants' lone goal.
With nonconference play complete, Haverford returns to Centennial Conference action Saturday, Oct. 17, traveling to Westminster, Md., to face McDaniel. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
