LANCASTER, Pa. — In a non-conference matchup at the Mayser Center, the Haverford College men's basketball team (6-6) fell 76-52 to Franklin & Marshall (11-1) on Wednesday night.
Adam Strong-Jacobson scored seven points, recorded two steals and added a block. Tyler Nolan added five points, led the team with two steals and collected four rebounds. Carter Warren finished with eight points, including two 3-pointers, and handed out four assists. Niko Rizos contributed six points, three rebounds and a block.
Vakaris Grauslys led Franklin & Marshall with 19 points, knocking down 5 of 9 attempts from 3-point range. Kevin Nowoswiat posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Bryson Amos-Whitfield added 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc and grabbed six rebounds. Dylan Cormac was active defensively for the hosts, with three steals and three points, while Steve Donahue matched Amos-Whitfield with 11 points and added two steals.
The Diplomats seized control early, holding the Fords to 28% shooting in the opening half. After Strong-Jacobson scored early to make it 4-2, Franklin & Marshall used a 17-3 run over a five-minute stretch, capped by a Grauslys 3-pointer, to build a 16-point advantage. The lead grew to as many as 19 following another Grauslys triple at the 8:13 mark, as Haverford struggled to find consistent offense against the hosts, who entered the contest receiving votes in the national poll.
Haverford showed signs of life early in the second half when Warren hit consecutive 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 42-30 with 16:54 remaining. The Diplomats answered with back-to-back 3-pointers from Amos-Whitfield to push the margin back to 18 and pulled away from there, extending the lead to 28 with 1:59 left in regulation.
After a the rare non-conference meeting against a Centennial Conference opponent, the Fords will officially open league play Saturday against Muhlenberg at Gooding '84 Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
