Women's Basketball Turned Away at No. 4 Johns Hopkins, 83-50

BALTIMORE -  Facing the nation's fourth-ranked team, the Haverford College women's basketball squad battled throughout but ultimately fell, 83-50, to unbeaten Johns Hopkins University on Saturday afternoon at Goldfarb Gym. The Fords (9-10, 1-8 CC) showed toughness on the defensive end, finishing with nine steals and six blocks, but Johns Hopkins (18-0, 9-0 CC) controlled the interior and tempo, outscoring Haverford 42-18 in the paint to remain perfect in conference play.

Caroline Orza, Brianna Feifer and Audrey Jakway each tallied 12 points to pace the Fords. Jakway recorded another double-double with 10 rebounds while also handing out five assists and collecting three steals in a well-rounded performance. Orza finished with nine boards while Shae Mercer added eight points to nine rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Bri Heafey chipped in five points and two steals.

Haverford struck first, as Heafey converted a jumper to open the scoring, and Orza followed with a triple midway through the first quarter that briefly gave the Fords a lead. Johns Hopkins responded with a decisive run fueled by transition baskets and second-chance opportunities, closing the opening period ahead 24-10.

The Blue Jays continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, but Haverford found some rhythm offensively. Orza knocked down another three-pointer, and Jakway facilitated a short run by assisting Mercer on a layup as the Fords trimmed the deficit. Johns Hopkins, however, closed the half strong with consecutive buckets in the final minute to take a 44-27 advantage into the locker room.

Johns Hopkins asserted control in the third quarter, using efficient perimeter shooting and ball movement to stretch the lead. Lauren Knudson and Kendall Dunham each connected from beyond the arc, while rookie Faith Williamson completed a three-point play to cap a balanced offensive surge. Heafey added a three-pointer for Haverford, but the Fords trailed 69-38 entering the final 10 minutes.

Haverford continued to compete in the fourth quarter, highlighted by scoring contributions from Brianna Feifer and steady work on the glass from Jakway. Johns Hopkins' depth and defensive rebounding, however, prevented any sustained rally as the Blue Jays closed out the 83-50 victory.

Williamson paced Johns Hopkins with 16 points, while Jocelyn Goldstein added 13 points in the paint. The Blue Jays also received double-digit efforts from Dunham and strong rebounding from Emily Collins, who added 11 rebounds.

Haverford next returns to Centennial Conference play on Wednesday, February 4, traveling to Hood Trophy rival Swarthmore for a 6 p.m. tip-off at Tarble Pavilion.
