HAVERFORD, Pa. — The Haverford College men's soccer team (5-0-5, 0-0-2 CC) and the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (2-3-5, 0-0-2 CC) played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Walton Field. With the result, the Fords earned their second Centennial Conference point of the season while matching the program's best start since 1977, when the team opened the year with a 10-game unbeaten streak.
The match began with both teams battling for early control. In the 7th minute, Haverford struck first through John Dowd, assisted by Josh Brown and Juan Rivera. Off a free kick, Rivera curled a ball toward the back post, where Brown redirected towards the frame. Dowd got the final touch, deflecting it off a Johns Hopkins defender and into the net to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. The Fords continued to press, with Charles Sharp recording multiple attempts, but were unable to double the lead. In goal, Grayson Benson was sharp early, making key stops, including a header save against Brendan Listzwan in the 7th minute. The Blue Jays created chances off corners by Connor Wilkes, but the visitors couldn't convert as Haverford carried its 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half saw Johns Hopkins increase its attacking presence while the Fords searched for an insurance goal. Haverford generated several looks, including a high shot from Brown in the 59th minute and a wide effort from Thomas Vanni in the 66th. Benson continued to hold strong with multiple saves, but the Blue Jays finally found the equalizer in the 77th minute. Vaghedi served a dangerous cross into the box, and Listzwan rose above the defense to head home his second goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1. Despite late urgency from the Fords, the Hopkins defense held firm, sending the teams off level.
Dowd recorded Haverford's lone goal on his only shot of the match. Brown added an assist and two shots, while Sharp led the team with six attempts, including one on target. Benson finished with four saves, facing five shots on goal.
For the Blue Jays, Listzwan was the focal point of the attack, tallying one goal on five shots, four of which were on target. Vaghedi added the assist, and in goal, Simon Turner and John Ghanem split time evenly, each recording two saves to preserve the draw.
The Fords return to action on Wednesday, October 1, hosting Centennial Conference foe Ursinus at Walton Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
