CARLISLE, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team (22-14, 10-8 CC) clinched its 16th trip to the Centennial Conference postseason—and third consecutive berth—with a doubleheader sweep of Dickinson (16-19, 7-11 CC) on Sunday afternoon at MacPhail Field on the campus of Dickinson College. With the pair of victories, Head Coach Dave Beccaria now sits at 498 career wins. The story of the doubleheader was excellent pitching from the Fords when they needed it most. Riley Grohowski got the ball in game one and twirled a gem, tossing 7.1 innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out three.
Haverford then turned to Sam Cohen in game two, and Cohen was again masterful, scattering just five hits over eight innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts. Cohen allowed only one extra-base hit. Drew Doyle and Wyatt Mattison pitched in relief, with neither surrendering an earned run.
Across the two contests, Luke Treese, Jackson Sgro, and Chuck Norton each posted three-hit days, while Daniel Rosman stole three bases and added a game-best four runs.
Haverford 6, Dickinson 3
In game one, the Fords got things started right away as Harry Genth extended his hitting streak to 33 games with a leadoff double. Genth now owns the second-longest hitting streak in Centennial Conference history, trailing only Al Posch, who reached safely in 37 consecutive games across 2013 and 2014.
Jackson Sgro's sacrifice fly plated Genth, and Haverford extended its lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, including an RBI single by Jonny Flieder and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by Luke Treese.
Dickinson clawed back in the fifth with a solo homer from Chase Weller and an RBI double by Kevin Schmidt, but Grohowski limited the damage. Haverford pulled away in the eighth, scoring three insurance runs thanks to a key RBI single from Norton, a sacrifice fly from Miles Prusek, and a wild pitch that allowed Daniel Rosman to score.
Treese led the Haverford offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Flieder, Norton, and Prusek each drove in runs. Despite being outhit 9–7, the Fords capitalized on five Dickinson errors and timely hitting to secure the win.
Weller paced Dickinson with a homer and two hits, but costly defensive miscues and missed opportunities with runners in scoring position (leaving 12 men on base) proved too much to overcome. Austin Buzza (4-3) took the loss for the Red Devils, surrendering three runs across six innings.
Haverford 8, Dickinson 1
Sam Cohen delivered eight shutout innings, and Haverford capitalized to complete a weekend sweep with an 8–1 victory in game two.
Cohen (5-1) scattered five hits while striking out four and walking one, anchoring a dominant pitching performance for the Fords. After two quiet innings, Haverford opened the scoring in the third. Jack Wallis was hit by a pitch and later came around to score on a fielder's choice grounder by Jonny Flieder. Luke Treese added an RBI single in the fourth to double the Fords' advantage.
Haverford tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Prusek's sacrifice bunt plated Chuck Norton, and Treese delivered again with a sacrifice fly to make it 4–0. The Fords put the game out of reach with a four-run eighth, fueled by aggressive baserunning and Dickinson miscues. Rosman and Prusek each reached on bunts and scored, while Treese and Wallis both brought home runs without the benefit of a hit.
Offensively, Jackson Sgro paced the Fords with three hits, while Norton added two hits and a pair of stolen bases. Rosman also stole two bases and scored three runs in an energetic all-around performance. Dickinson struggled to mount any offense against Cohen, managing only one run in the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Grayson Walker.
Drew Norton (2-3) took the loss for Dickinson, allowing four runs (three earned) over five innings.
With a doubleheader sweep and Swarthmore's split with McDaniel, Haverford has officially clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's Centennial Conference tournament. With a bye ascertained, Haverford will face off with second-seeded Swarthmore on Thursday at Clothier Field. Game times and further information will be confirmed on Monday morning's conference calls.
